Asking GP for referral for ds & myself.

I have been thinking about asking GP for a referral to a development paediatrician since reading these boards for DS who is 12. He has quite a few of the signs of dyspraxia or AS but really not sure as no one has ever mentioned this to me & I had not considered this till reading these boards. There have been lots of things over the years which I have just put down to immaturity/only child so not strict enough/general personality quirkiness. He is doing very well at school but doesn't really mix & usually goes to school clubs & library at luchtimes (I think so he does not have to go in yard) He has a couple of friends at home but never wants to play with them as they play footballl all the time & he isn't very good at it & would really prefer to spend his time on laptop/ds/ipod/watch tv.

I also think I have the same problems but have got by. I can see a possible benefit in getting a dx for him but would there be any point is a dx for me too as I am in my 40's now. I have been thinking about this for a couple of months now but keep brushing it away wondering whether putting a label on us would help or whether we are fine & I just need to support DS more & maybe mention the social thing to his teacher.
Any advice much appreciated.

I think if your sat there wondering it might be well worth a visit to your gp to discuss your concerns.

Getting a dx along the nhs route takes quite a long time from start to finish.. You won't just walk into the gp office and walk out with a dx and a leaflet :)

it's hard to know whether to go for a label or not. If a label becomes a signpost to be able to access extra help for your ds.. If things are effecting his education and his life .. It might be worth it.

If education is going okay, his needs are being met, none of it is really getting in the way as he sees it.. Then it might just be a label for labels sake.( and a long process to boot)

Be guided by your gut feelings and go and have a natter with the GP :)
