Has anyone been given extra 1-1 hours after official dx?

I'm really struggling everyone with Alfie.
Alfie has been going through the dx process for 2 years, in that time it was agreed by ed physc he should repeat reception, he was statemented and given min 1-1 of 17 hours within a group of no more than 6 children.

He is in a class of 30, but as well as his 1-1 there was another 2-3 teaching assistants.
Now jump forward to present day he has been officially dx with asd, mid range, he has moved up to yr1 and has regressed massively, gone is my lovely bubbly son who enjoyed going to school, now I have an hysterical boy who is frightened to go to school. His stutter has come back and what little food he eats he is refusing. The reason, his 1-1 is only in the morning and in the afternoon there is just one teacher, no teaching assistants at all to a class of 30.

This just can't be right, does my son go to lunch and come back and hasn't got asd. WTF

So back to my initial question and sorry for ranting, just I am livid.
Has anyone been given extra hours funding, can we get the statement looked at? (sorry if daft questions)

Erm... if the statement says 17 hours then 17 hours he should get, regardless of what the dx says.

The TA, as far as I can see, is only covering 15 hours a week - not the 17 - which, I think is probably not enough anyway.
I'd have thought 20 was more suitable.

When is the statement review due? You could strop kick up a fuss about it then but if it can't wait then phone the school and ask for a chat with the SENCO. Don't be fobbed off with 'we'll see what it's like when he's settled into the class' thing. He's clearly unhappy.

Sorry he's having a pooey time of it.

my DSs statement was not finalised but was at 21 hours BEFORE his diagnosis......within 2 weeks of DX we got full time and specialist school so a doagnosis does make a difference despite the fact statements should be made based on child's needs. I think a DX forces the LEA to look again at your childs needs as it takes the ? away IYKWIM

You can ask for a review of the statement now as you feel your ds needs have changed.

alfiemama · 05/09/2010 22:13

Thanks Spinkle. Sorry TA does do 17 hours as she works one afternoon (she covered his welly walk).

Statement review is Nov (just dug it out) typical as my baby is due then.

We wasn't happy with 17 hours but naively thought better than nothing and as he had other TA in the class that helped him he did ok, actually he did really well.

Even paed and child physc said initially he would struggle with a class of 30, but chief of education (he was involved as ed physc was poorly and we stomped our feet as this was delaying him being observed)said he would block an sn school and he said he had a processing delay, he also said after cognitive testing that Alfie was playing him, as he couldn't tell him how many legs a bird had, he also said son would never write and would need voice activated PC's, what a load of tosh, he can now write his name Hmm.

Alfie learns by having things broken down clearly from his 1-1, so anything he is told by teacher in afternoon, well he is simply not going to learn anything.
Last week when it was really hot, Alfie came home with his jumper on, as he would not have the confidence to ask for it to be taken off, he also struggles with hot/cold and gets very confused.

Thanks Bonkerz, that's good to know, did you have to ask for it to be looked at, or did they do this automatically after dx?

You can ask for a review whenever you want you don't have to wait until November.

alfiemama · 05/09/2010 22:19

Thanks wasuup, I think we will have to do that, or ask school to fund extra hours, I bet that will make them get their arses into gear Grin

Agree with Bonkerz. Technically, dx shouldn't make a difference. The main reason for the hours needing to increase is your son's regression, not getting a dx.

Having said that, the dx will make it harder for them to refuse to increase the hours. With J, his dx was the final push needed for the hours to go up (though the reason he needed the hours up was because his needs were what they were...the dx didn't change those needs iyswim)

You can either ask for a re-assessment of his SEN or ask the school to bring forward the Annual Review or hold an Interim Review.

alfiemama · 06/09/2010 17:38

Thanks givemesleep. Glad you managed to increase J's hours. May I ask what your hours where initially to the final outcome?

We spoke to his TA today and expressed our concerns and that we will be pushing for full 1-1 she agreed he needs help in the afternoon she mentioned in the interim period maybe a buddy in his class. We asked her would she be willing to up her hours if need be and she would love to do more hours.

We have emailed the school our intentions and what we feel is needed whether the school fund or not and have left a message for the paed and lady from LEA who deals with statement, to ask for the review to be brought forward as we feel his needs have changed.

Tricky. Technically, he was allocated 50% 1:1 time but he did get more, paid for by school. He now gets 100% but his behaviour had really gone downhill at the time of the dx so I don't think it was just the dx.

Good luck with review. They will need to amend Statement with new dx anyway (Part 2) but don't focus too much on the dx. Keep it focused on 'ds's autism makes x hard so he needs y extra support with z so needs more hours' etc.

alfiemama · 09/09/2010 19:22

Sorry not been on for a few days, thanks givemesleep. Thats a good point about the dx.

We have had a meeting with the school today, who said review is on 7th October and they will support us for as much help as possible. I get the feeling though when push comes to shove, they will only do so much and will not fund the extra hours themselves. I am also peeved at his 1-1 as she didn't attend and said that ds didn't seem lost in afternoon but then admitted she hadn't seen him in afternoon Hmm.

Typical as well they had a copy of the ados report, we still haven't seen it Angry
