We are due to move soon severeal hundreds miles from where we are living now. My son has always attended special school since the age of two years old. He has a statement, needs physio, OT, SALT input, continence support etc. He really cannot and will not cope within a mainstream setting.

I have spoken to his current school and they have put me in touch witha special school that will be within catchment of our future area of choice. The school however (the new one) are saying they have a waiting list (eek!) What on earth happens in cases like this? Please don'ty tell me I am expecting to keep him at home, no matter how much I love him (!!) until a place becomes available?? Both MY husband and I work and are moving for work and we have other children.

Has anyon e been in this situation and moved?

Surely people do move with severely disabled children? It can't be that unusual

Yes I have and the statement transferred over to his new specialist school, the local authorities should sort it out, they have an obligation to put him in an appropriate setting.

My sons school had waiting lists too, he went straight in.

oh thank you rafwife, that makes me feel a bit more settled. Who did you get in toyuch with in order to transfer documentation etc?

I have emailed the Head at his current school and I am awaiting a response. I don't think it helps that it is end of term!

Yeah I dealt with the inital LEA at first and they kept sending the paperwork to the wrong person so also brought the new one into the equation too.

Thank you rafwife. I have called the lEA person and she is sending the file up so at least he can be on the waiting list, with what she feels is priority, before we move. Hopefully it will be straightforward.

Do you have to move alot? fellow defence This is our second time with special schooling in mind, though last time I think I was a bit naive and this time I am more worried!

Not too much but due a move soon and we would have been here 2 years but that's unusually short for several reasons, usually in post for 3-4 years.

Not looking forward to moving and sorting the schools out though this time we will have specific help from MOD welfare.
