Dyslexic dd in year 3 in small class of 17, next year, current year 3 (by then year 4) will be combining with the year below to form a class of 34. Does that necessarily present a problem for dd?

Village school - basically 1 class per year group. Current year 3 and year 2 have the advantage of being small intakes (both 17 pupils a piece) and thus small class sizes.

Next year however, they are combining to make a joint Y3 and Y4 in a class size of 34!

My gut feeling is that dyslexic dd will be disadvantaged by this. We can afford private schooling (with small class sizes) and indeed dd spent a day at a local private school back in January, but she is totally opposed to moving schools on a kind of visceral, emotional level.

I suppose it depends what the school is presently doing to assist your child with her difficulties; are they providing any 1-1 evidence-based, remedial reading instruction?

If you can afford private schooling but your child doesn't want to move, then I'd recommend that you look for someone locally who can provide private tutoring:

am currently considering a similar move for DD based on same reasons. It's not easy when they are emotionally attached to their current school.

I'm trying to detach myself emotionally in order to think rationally - therefore have decided DD won't thank me in years to come if we haven't helped give her everything she needs to progress at school. It feels as if it's our job as parents to ensure she gets the education she needs if we have the means to do so - kids change friends as they move through school but they only get one go at an education!! That's my thinking anyway!

We have a dyslexia action tutor for DD which is helping a lot but isn't enough though in the first instance it may help you to understand what she needs? DD is lost in a huge class and her dyslexia is usually forgotten about by the constant stream of supply teachers!
