Ds has been referred to a pupil referral unit...what happens there?

Ds has severe adhd and is struggling with mainstream school...We had a school based meeting and the consultant from CAMHS has recommended he is assessed there..what happens there? and what type of support will he get?

How old is your DS? Will he be attending the PRU part-time or full time. PRUs are usually for pupils with Behavioural, Social and Emotional Difficulties. They work in small groups where the emphasis is to develop their emotional literacy skills and the aim is usually that they return to mainstream school after a period of intervention. The pupils usually has three or four behaviour targets and these should be reviewed. Authorities use their PRUs differently - but the above should be the same in most, ie some are part-time, others full time, some are only for KS4, others offer primary PRUs, some insist pupils return to mainstream within a time frame, others (particularly secondary) they may remain for the rest of their schooling.

They usually have a high staff:child ratio and the children work in very small groups. They have additional resources to make the environment attractive and very closely monitored procedures to ensure that the behaviour is well controlled. They work on getting pupils back into school with strategies in place to keep them there.

How old is he?

round here they call them short stay schools, so clue is in the title. I have visited a few, they have quite a mix but a lot of very troubled kids

red37, how old is your child? I don't have much experience of PRUs for primary school age children, but have experience with secondary school age young people.

I have to be brutally honest, here. I don't like them. They seem to be holding pens for children who the LEA have no idea what to do with.

ADHD is a SEN. Is your LEA really arguing that they have NO other way of supporting your DS? CAMHS shouldn't be making these sort of reccommendations, either. How often is your DS seeing them, and who does he see (psychotherapist, psychiatrist etc?).

Has he got a statement? What provision does it include?
