transition to secondary school-seeking help and advice

hiya all,

i can't believe that i am coming on mn to ask for advice about my dc who is y5 and starting the transition(wrt statements)for secondary school
(i first found mn when she was only 3)
dc has cp quadriplegia and is ambulant but uses a wheelchair for trips out of school,long days if she is feeling tired or if she is having problems with afo's(can not stand or walk unaided)
so does anyone have any tips or handy hints?

how to secure secondary school of choice?

transport issues due to disability?

everyday tasks that (you hadn't considered )but are issues for your child?

Check out the admission policy for the area before you start. It may vary between types of school. Call all all the schools that you like the look of and ask to speak to the SENCO. They are usually more aware of the level of support available to your child and should be willing to discuss your needs before you apply. A major factor in choosing a secondary for my son was the pastoral care and support available. He had more friendship/bullying issues than academic ones. Shortly after starting he went into meltdown but the school were fantastic. They worked out he was autistic in 6 weeks where his primary hadn't in 6 years.
Be prepared to stand your ground Chatee if you feel fobbed off at any point-you may have already had to develop a thick skin...
