DLA evidence

Hi all,

I recently submitted forms for DLA for my 9 year old son.

He does not use the toilet and will only go in a nappy. He does have accidents if we aren’t quick enough getting to the bathroom or on the way home from school as he holds it in all day.

he wakes every night either because he needs to put a nappy on or he’s done it without realising in his sleep. He gets so anxious and worked up it takes me ages to settle him

he has a very restricted diet of around 3/4 different meals which mainly consist of chicken nuggets and plain pasta. I have to supervise each meal as he will tell me he’s eaten it but throw it away or make up excuses not to eat it.

he is unable to do zips, buttons or laces. No sense of danger on the roads etc

He is on the waiting list for a SPACE neurodivergent assessment which the GP submitted.

He masks at school so up to this point they have been unaware of any of his struggles - apart from noticing that I only send him with snacks that he likes in a packed lunch as he won’t eat anything else.
I have now had a meeting with them so they are aware and they have created a one page profile for him.

my question is will I automatically get refused without anything backing me up?

thanks in advance for replies 😊

You are unlikely to be awarded DLA without evidence.

However, you can use the referral letter for the SPACE ND assessment as evidence. If you don’t have a copy, you can request a copy.

You can also send the one page profile as evidence.

There may be something helpful in DS’s GP notes too.

Did you include a statement from anyone in the section on the form for that?

DWP may contact the school.

I know you said DS masks at school but surely the school has been aware of his toileting difficulties before now? Same for his motor difficulties? And no sense of danger?

Separate to the DLA, if DS isn’t under the continence service, he should be. In some areas, you can self refer. If you can’t the school or GP will be able to. Also separate to the DLA, if DS hasn’t seen OT and a dietician, he needs to. Again, in some areas, you can self refer to these. If you can’t the school or GP will be able to.
