DS is 6, just started year 2 in mainstream and currently going through the long EHCP process which has been delayed a few times. Had the educational psychologist’s report through today finally. The school have reported that they believe DS may be hypermobile and that he has shown issues with core strength / posture and has an abnormal gait. They said this affects PE as they have safety concerns during some activities.
They have never mentioned any of these issues with me whatsoever before. I’ve been to numerous meetings with SENCO over the past two years, speak with his class teacher at collection a couple of times a week and never once has anyone said anything of the sort.
Their reason for believing he may be hypermobile is that he had a pulled elbow a few times. It hasn’t happened for a year. It first happened when he was 2 and the doctor warned he would be susceptible until the bones fused between 5-6 years old. It did happen a further 4-5 times and last happened when he was 5 at school. That’s it. No other reason for writing that.
The core issues are purely because he sometimes leans on adults and doesn’t like to sit in class for extended periods, moves around a lot etc. He can and does sit upright in the car, on trains, planes etc for extended periods. He’s an incredibly active boy so loves to climb, can do headstands, will gladly trampoline for hours if allowed, no complaints about pain, loves climbing in the playground etc. I just have zero reason to believe there are any issues with core strength so again, why?
Then finally, he has an abnormal gait. He does walk differently, that’s pretty common with autistic children though I thought? It doesn’t prevent him from walking long distances (we do this quite often) or running even, he just does it in his own way.
I’ve obviously queried this with school but why would they write things in a report like this without thinking to mention these concerns to me at all?
