Did you or your child with learning difficulties learn to drive?

If you have learning difficulties or are the parent of an adult with learning difficulties, did you/they learn to drive? If so, did you do anything differently and what learning difficulties do you/they have? It's a good few years yet for my child, but I would love her to have the freedom it brings if possible - yet don't want to pressure her into driving lessons if it feels unsafe and will damage her self esteem.

Slightly different, but may be helpful.

My DD1 with dyspraxia learned. DH taught her with very short lessons to start with, something like 10 minutes then gradually increasing.

DH tried to teach DD2 (dyspraxia, anxiety) but she doesn't respond well to our teaching her anything. We found an instructor who would do 30min lessons and she did a few but then other events overtook and she didn't have enough bandwidth. It's a shame as it really cuts down on job possibilities. May come back in due course.

We bought an old automatic car and installed dual controls to make it safer for DH to take them out.

DS2 (AuDHD) is currently learning to drive. Other than finding an instructor who has experience of working with those with additional needs, we haven’t done anything different. He had extra time for his theory, but he didn’t need/use it.

Thank you. @TeenToTwenties how much did it cost to install dual control?

The first car came with them (!)
The second we got put in by He-Man Dual Controls - Dual Control installation throughout the UK and it was £200 or so iirc.
Which seems a lot, but if it saves 5 driving lessons by being able to practice more confidently / earlier it pays for itself.

DD1 only had 4 paid for lessons but did 70-80 hours driving 'tuition' with DH.
