Combined ADHD and Autism Assessment - Age 6 too young?

Hi

My son (in Year 1) has been having SEN support since nursery. He's suspected to have ADHD and possibly autism too.

Is 6 too young to get a proper diagnosis for adhd?

Can I ask, what leads you to think this? What's he like day2day.. I ask for curiosity not judgement. I have 4.5 year old with also same concerns. Dyspraxia has in the past been said but think attention is main focus so seems to have shifted to possible ADHD instead

It isn’t too young. Although not all services would do a combined assessment. Some would assessor for one then assess (or refer to assess because in some areas it isn’t the same service) for the other if necessary.

My nephew was diagnosed before the age of 3, as were a couple of my friends’ sons…it was very obvious though so I suppose all cases differ.

My son got his ASD diagnosis the day after his 6th birthday and the ADHD one 4 months later - they said he probably had ADHD when they gave his ASD but needed to do CONORS to be certain which took several weeks.

We have loads of 2 year olds with diagnosis confirmed. And even more aged 3 to 5 so never too early

No, my daughter was diagnosis with ADHD at 6, and the symptoms were pretty obvious by then.

It is very, very unusual to get an ADHD diagnosis at 2y/o in the UK.

ADHD usually isn't looked at until 6, ASD can be diagnosed as young as 2.
(I had this convo the other day with my health visitor)
The reasoning is the teams that assess the child need to see how they deal with classroom environments and transitions/learning is a large part of the struggle with ADHD. My little one has been referred for an ASD assessment at 2.5 years but the team said they'll look at him when he's 3, it's different area to area but it's mostly to see if they grow out of the behaviours.
