Hey all!

I have a 4 year old son with speech delay and limited understanding (No diagnosis, doctors think he is delayed and will catch up in his own time and we have recently discovered his ears are blocked too). I've been reading a lot about folinic acid the past few months and seeing great things in regards to helping with speech and other developmental aspects but I'm unable to find any way of purchasing this in the UK. Does anybody know where this can be purchased? I'm nervous about potentially buying something harmful for my son.

TIA x

Hi OP , my doctor looked into this for my daughter and it’s only available in the united states currently.
A high strength Omega 3 fish oils has some research evidence to help with speech delay in children especially those who have a neuro divergence. It’s worth a try. My daughter was non verbal until she was four She is now five and fully conversational but attends speech therapy for unclear sounds, she has an autism diagnosis.

Hi Starbri8, thank you so much for this - is this something you gave to your daughter and if so, which brand? I really appreciate the advice and so pleased your daughter is doing well xxx

I gave my daughter Eskimo 3 Extra , they are a high DHA fish oil , we also put her on a probiotic sachet daily which we mixed in yogurt. Poor gut health can have an effect on cognitive ability.

Hands up i don’t know if any of this helped but it caused no harm … I would have tried anything and I did ! We did cranial sacral therapy , Reiki, baby chiropractor , God only knows what helped and what didn’t but she eventually spoke and caught up with 4 years speech in a few months , but most importantly she slept , I would be into her 6/8 times a night for over 4 years .

I hope your little one progresses sometimes it’s just one day at a time … I know how it feels to be so worried that you are literally swallowing down the fear. I try not to think too far ahead which isn't in my nature to do. I sincerely wish you and your little one the very best of luck . It’s not an easy road but there are days and wins which give us hope . ❤️

Folinic Acid is available is the UK. It is used in certain medical conditions. DS1 has it IV. I have never heard it being used for developmental reasons in the UK, though. It has made no difference to DS1 developmentally.

California gold folinic acid. It can be bought in the UK but is quite low dosage compared to leucovorin. Leucovorin is a high strength folinic acid (b9) leucovorin can be bought and delivered to the uk from pharmacies in France as it's available over the counter there. It's called folinoral or lederfoline. Both are the same. There's also the option of methylfolate (5-mthf) which is a methylated b9 and can also works wonders for a lot of children with speech delay. Can be bought OTC in uk. Each child is different and may respond to one better than the other. Whichever one you go with it is best to start slow and build the dosage up as can have side effects (hyperactivity, poor sleep, aggression) it is also best to pair it with b12 x
