Moving to Brighton with autistic teen (Asperger’s)

We’re moving back to Brighton after 20 years away. Our 13yo son has Asperger’s and we’re looking for groups or activities he could join as a way of meeting people - perhaps ASD football? Can anyone recommend anywhere?
The plan is to introduce him now on short stays to make transition easier. Any recommendations for schools also welcome - he’s currently not attending so know this is going to be difficult. I’d be grateful for any suggestions

Brighton and Hove FC have lots of disability football sessions.

For other groups, try looking at the LA’s local offer online.

For schools, are you looking at mainstream or special school? If you are moving from within England, does DS have an EHCP?

Thanks @EndlessLight
on school, he really needs a small school so I think that rules out mainstream. We’re moving from Wales so he doesn’t have an EHCP and he’s not in school atm because of complete lack of support.

As soon as you move, request an EHCNA. An EHCNA is the needs assessment you first request as part of the EHCP process. IPSEA is a charity who supports parents and on their website they have a model letter you can use.

Once you move the LA will have to provide education. This would typically be in a mainstream school, but if that isn’t suitable, the LA will have to make other arrangements.

You may find this LGO case interesting.

Unfortunately, there’s not much provision for DC with your DS’s profile. Depending on DS’s exact needs, you could look at Northease Manor and Frewen college. Both in East Sussex. They accept some DC with AS depending on their profile. You could also look at some independent mainstream schools if they would work. For example, The Drive Prep has a high number of DC with EHCPs.
