Job ideas 19 yr old + discalculia + slow processing

Hi All,

My 19 year old has discalculia and slow processing and massive anxiety that goes alongside, mostly social anxiety. He'd love a part time/weekend job for the money, but also I think it would help his confidence massively. But any ideas for a regular job that he could manage - shop work is out as he cannot work on a til (when it tells you how much change to give he cannot count the change up without great difficulty, and wouldnt manage this under the gaze of the general public, waiting for him to finish). Most shops near me train all staff members up for both tils and shelf stacking and expect being able to do both.

While he could do babysitting, he would prefer, if possible, something more regular so he can take on some of his own bills.

Lawn cutting, paper deliveries and dog walking are all done by adults in our area - some of them on employment schemes, so counts them out basically.

Any other ideas of what has worked for other people in a similar situation? Or ideas on where/what job might suit?

Thank you

Cleaning? Particularly holiday cottages/AirB&B/caravans, as these are often weekend changeovers, and difficult to get cleaners for. You might be able to teach him some skills at home to prepare (with a bonus of a well house trained teen!)

That's an idea @Bubbleswithsqueak thank you! He does have some physical limitations as well I forgot to mention, but I'm sure we could find a way around that

Would DS’s physical difficulties make pot washing hard?

Can DS swim well? If so, you could look at him becoming a lifeguard.

If you have any large stores of the large supermarket chains locally it is worth speaking to them. They will sometimes take on employees as shelf stackers only. Although some of these are only lates/nights.
