My 12 yr old son is screen obsessed. He has ADHD which obviously doesn’t help as he finds it hard to manage and self regulate. Phone and fifa, he would literally not leave the house if he didn’t have to, and I need to rethink how I organise things at home. He’ll have the phone until 7.30/8pm on a weekday and plays fifa on his ps4 after school. I’ve always had screen time limits but his dependency has got way worse in the past 6 months and tbh it drives me nuts. Will sit in the car on a long journey glued to TikTok and you tube. Is late downstairs to meals as he’s ‘just finishing a game’. Doesn’t hear me a lot of the time and I end up repeating/nagging/getting cross. Picks up the phone at every opportunity and seemingly can’t go longer than 5 mins without it 😥

Can anyone share how they manage screen time for their 12/13 yr olds? I’d like to reset the boundaries if I can! Thanks.

Monday to Friday outside of using screens (other than phones) for school work, whilst travelling or during treatments for a medical condition/physio teen DSs can have 1 hour a day. For us/them, that is plenty when you take into account clubs and other things they need to do. Weekends are more relaxed as long as it’s not at the expense of other things e.g. sports clubs they go to.

DS1&3 aren’t particularly fussed about their phones. They mainly use them for messaging us. DS2 would be constantly messaging friends if allowed. We encourage him to put it to the side when he is doing something and we don’t allow him to have it at mealtimes or from 30 mins before bed/overnight (he gets messages at all times of the night!).
