coloured overlays/lenses for dyslexic children

Does anybody know if it is possible to have a child assessed on the NHS to see if they would benefit from coloured lenses or overlays? I have been told that parents have to pay, but as not all dyslexics would benefit from this then it seems an expensive choice.

It msut be possible, my mother's best friend's daughter got hers on the NHS. Maybe it varies from area to area?

Wonder who to ask. GP or optician maybe?

Im not sure how she first got hers. It was her uni that actually first picked up on the problem but Im not sure who she got the glasses from. Do you have a paed or ed psych who you could ask?

Obviously we coldn't provide lenses, but we did provide overlays.

Fallen Madonna how did you know which children to provide the overlays for and which colours to use? Who assessed the children?

Chops - there is more funding available to help university students with dyslexia than school children so maybe that's why. Lots of girls are picked up as dyslexic at uni apparently.

The learning support staff assessed the children (after training). Which colour works best is part of the assessment.

I have a set of overlays I use with children. I'm not specifically trained with them but there's an appropriate order to try them in. You can buy them for about £20 a set from crossbow education on line - www.crossboweducation.com/here

www.crossboweducation.com/here - would be easier maybe to contact local BDA and ask for a list of tutors as most will have the overlays and will test. Tutors round here charge around £20ph and it's often easier for someone else to test your own child.

there are universitys doing research projects into this area that would do it for free - where about are you?

DH found out he was dyslexic at uni, got there through clearing, got a pink overlay, his employer has just paid for him to have a reassessment and a pair of green tinted glasses. The test was done at a local optician, but he had to ask at a few before he found one who did the colour test

A clinic who do specialist eye tests (think it is in Scotland) and prescribe coloured lenses. Found the link on an ASD forum - many of the parents have been there and spoke very highly of it. I think it said tests are free, but depending on lenses you may have to contribute (look at website for more accurate explanation!)
