HFA DS mimicking accents (Y8) - getting into trouble

Hello
I have been struggling with this for a while. DS has HFA and has a knack for picking up accents very easily. He got into trouble for putting on accents whilst reading aloud in English. His teacher had to ask him a number of times to stop and he carried on. He also does this when out and about and hears someone. His teacher said she asked him to stop as it was stereotyping. I have explained to him many times it isn’t appropriate, but it’s like he can’t stop himself. I really don’t know what to do. Any advice on how to handle this?

I don’t think the school should be punishing DS. Taking on other accents isn’t uncommon in autistic individuals, sometimes it isn’t even a conscious decision. Rather than punishing the school should be reminding him, repeatedly if necessary.
