SEN at secondary. What to expect.

DS is in year 7. He has dyspraxia. We have an EP report which we have shared with the school, the SENCo at primary gave the secondary SENCo a handover, and we drew up a “pupil profile” which has been shared with all teachers and makes a number of recommendations.

I’m certain that not all of the recommendations are being implemented (e.g. DS isn’t sitting at the front in all lessons, he isn’t collecting his laptop and no-one is telling him he has to apart from me, and teachers aren’t repeating instructions and checking understanding).

What should I expect the school to be doing? Should there be a clear plan with goals? What should I ask the SENCo for? I’m worried he is slipping further behind his peers and flying under the radar.

DS doesn’t qualify for an EHCP.

Have you spoken to the SENCO again? Are you able to email the teachers? There should be some form of assess/plan/do/review, IEP or whatever the school calls their version.

The school must make their best endeavours to meet a pupil’s SEN. However, the only way to guarantee specific provision is via an EHCP. Who told you DS doesn’t qualify for an EHCP?
