Hi, im looking for advice please. My child is suspected autistic, school flagged this when she started in reception and I completely agree. Their symptoms are getting worse as they grow older. Now in year one. There is a nearby school that specialises in SEN specifically Autism of all levels. For this school I need an EHC Assessment.

DC hasn’t yet been diagnosed despite many trips to the GP and asking for a referral to Cahms. School and leaders of clubs she attends have all written testimonies to aid a diagnosis. Please can someone advise how to push for an obtain this assessment to give her the chance to move to this school? The school takes students from nursery age to 18 and I do feel it would benefit her hugely and change her life, give her less anxiety etc.

You don’t need a diagnosis for an EHCP as they are based on needs rather than diagnosis. You can request an assessment yourself. IPSEA have a model letter on their website you can send to the LA.

Although you may need a diagnosis for that specific school if it is a specialist ASD school. In some areas you can self refer for autism assessments. If that isn’t possible in your area the school may be able to refer.
