So my autistic 3 year old will only drink out of a tommee tippee bottle. Nothing else. Won’t entertain anything else. But we’ve bitten the bullet and thrown them in the bin. She’s drank dribbles of water from a plastic water bottle today with a sports cap kind of lid but nothing substantial. She’s still crying for her bottle as she has it at bed. I’ve been in to her and tried to calm her but I’ve left it now in hopes she’s soon going to fall asleep. I feel rotten. She has limited understanding, speech delay and I think obvious sensory issues with her mouth as tooth brushing etc is also a headache. Have I done the wrong thing? I feel terrible.

Personally, raising two children with additional needs, I would give her the bottle again. Listen to your instincts, you feel rotten and she is struggling.

Forcing her not to have it obviously doesn't change her nature or difficulties. It is hard being a parent with SEN children. Don't beat yourself up about it.

Thank you. I have to remind myself at times that I’m not dealing with a child with no needs, she will only drink from the bottle. She only drinks water so I’m not worried about teeth. She will start nursery in September and I’m worried about how she will be with it. So I thought try to get rid of them. In hindsight perhaps I should have left her with the water bottle in the day and give her the bottle at night to settle her. She’s cried so much tonight. I feel evil. But I only want what’s best for her

Give her the bottle back. Try and wean her off the bottle over time.

If you told me as a NT adult that I couldn't have my favourite cup, I wouldn't be happy. Magnify that by 1000.

You are doing the best you can. Be kind to yourself.

I think I let people comments really get to me. I ordered her new bottle earlier. Hopefully should come tomorrow. She’s surprising done well drinking from a sports cap style bottle. But she’s just not drinking as much as she usually does. Only managed about 300mls to today x
