GP who prescribes ADHD meds near Cambridge University

My very ADHD son, through sheer hard work received an offer from Cambridge University. We were delighted to hear the news. After many years of struggling with his ADHD this was really a moment of joy for him. He’s basically very much dependant on his meds and is unable to function without them. We recently had a meeting with his psychiatrist and he says that many GPs around Cambridge University are unwilling to prescribe ADHD meds and that we have to ensure that we register with the right one. Has anyone else faced this situation before? Would really appreciate if anyone knows of a GP who would be sympathetic to ADHD patients. The thought of my poor DS going to a GP who makes him feel like bad about himself would be terrible. Thanks so much for your help in advance. Any info would be great.

Sorry, I can’t help with your specific query, but just wanted to clarify that GP cannot prescribe ADHD meds. Your psychiatrist would need to establish a shared care agreement.

Hopefully someone will come on soon who can give you an idea of a GP who’d be open to this. Otherwise, you could just call some surgeries and ask. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the info.
Yes, you’re right, our psychiatrist who is in Liverpool writes a letter to the GP who then takes over and writes out the prescription.
I appreciate all info or experiences that anyone can share.

An alternative is for your DS to stay registered at current GP, collect prescriptions from a pharmacy in Cambridge and if he needs to see a GP in Cambridge can be seen as a temporary patient.
