For DS (18): can I get him a private test for ADHD?

DS1 is almost 18 and applying for university. He currently gets extra time in his school exams, and wants to be able to request the same at university, if that’s possible.

He doesn’t have a diagnosis of anything. He gets the extra time at school because his handwriting is much, much slower than his mental processing ability. It turns out he has been wondering if he has ADHD.

Can I get him a private test for that? He feels something is “different” with him but isn’t sure what it is. However his lack of concentration is worrying him.

A couple of his teachers, when he was much younger, suggested he might have dyspraxia but I was referred for testing to a Speech and Language Centre and they didn’t find anything amiss.

If ADHD does run in families, I wouldn’t be surprised if I found out that my brother, my mum and I all had it too. We’re all the same: hyper-focus followed by inattention; buy books but never read them; hopeless at life admin; prone to depression and self-hatred at being disorganised, etc.

Could I get him a private test? I’m only saying private as the NHS is overwhelmed at the moment and it might be quicker to go private.

Thank you.
