DD is being referred through SENCO at her new primary and I have some questions

She has been having speech therapy.

Now she is about to start primary school and her therapy is being passed over to the school age SALTS.

I wondered how long she will be in the system for ie will she always be monitored through SENCO, or, if her situation improves so much so that she doesnt need help, she'll be knocked off their register, so to speak?

I should think she'll be on the SEN Register while she's having the SALT input, then if she stops needing the SALT and her learning is fine she will be taken off the register and just be kept an eye on by her classteacher. If she's having problems in class then the SENCO and classteacher will both be involved to implement appropriate support for her.

Should have added that if she needs extra support in any shape or form then she'll stay on the register until you and they are happy with her progress.

I dont know an awful lot about this.

It is quite normal for children to be on the regester for a while, and once their SEN have been met, and difficulties overcome, the child will be taken off the regester.

I've just read the 'thumbnails' of the SEN of our new year 7 intake and a couple of them say 'X is expected to come off the regester soon, please monitor the following and give feed back'

Are hearing difficulties something that comes under the same banner?

depends on the nature of the problem, I would think, and how long term the issues are.

So if a child had glue ear, that affected hearing and speech, they had the glue ear sorted, SALT helped the language, children catches up, comes off the regester.

More profound hearling loss which is long term, child wil prob stay on the regester, which will say things like, sit at front where they can see you as they lip read. Or be aware that they have coclear impalnt

Over 20% of kids will be on the SEN regester at some point in their schoo life

It is a glue ear plus SALT issue. The hearing loss is considered to be a direct result of the glue ear atm.

She's on a waiting list for grommits and adenoid removal thankfully.

Dh had grommets and it sorted it out for him, when he was a lad!

Didn;t even stop him getting into the RAF as a fast jet pilot!

Now that is promising

My DB was refused by the RAF because of a very minor defect in his spine....he was gutted.

Is a Policeman now instead.
