My DS is 3yrs, he constantly makes a certain noise which he repeats over and over, for minutes at a time and at the same time he opens and shuts his hands ( like doing twinkle twinkle little star type action by the side of his head.) He doesn't look at his hands, but I guess he can probably see them out do the corner of his eye. They don't touch his face. So I suppose my question is, is this an indicator of a specific SEN? I know it's an unusual thing to do. The noise can appear at any time, running about, playing with others, just at home or in sitting the car. I feel like he has done it 9 thousand times today Hmm He has probably been doing this for the last six months, so I think it's more than a phase. Any ideas?

Hi greenandyellowduck, I saw your post and didn't want to read and dash. I'm a teacher and a parent of two children. While the repetitive movements and sounds can be commonly associated with SEN this is not always the case. If your DS is happy, socialising and meeting developmental milestones then the 'stimming' (a form of self-regulatory behaviour which your child could be doing for several different reasons) is a behavior they may well grow out of as they develop more skills.

If you are at all concerned, I'd have a chat with your GP or health visitor. They can refer for further assessment should they think it is warranted.x
