My son is 10, and has a Specific language impairment and also dyslexia. He still isn't reading in any meaningful way. I'm trying to get a statement as he goes up to high school next year and is in no way going to cope without significant help. his school agree that he needs more help both now and going forward but the usual stuff about funding means they are dragging their feet i feel.
Ive recently been reading up and discovered that i can ask for an assessment myself so I am currently drafting a letter in order to facilitate this. i'm also trying to find the money to get independent speech and language assessments and visual stress testing done. but as a single parent who is a student this is easier said than done.
so i suppose i' looking for other parents whos children have the same problem and for any advice on the statementing process.thanks!

Hi, Check out the sample letters and advice on the IPSEA website. Some helpful and useful stuff on there.

Ds3 (also ten) just been tested for it. But I now don't think he has it tbh. Just waiting for results but he didn't struggle with the tests - so I think something else is going on.

Yes you can apply for an EHCP yourself. IPSEA is your friend.

Look for your LAs website, you may find info in the education section about the process.

Visual stress testing may be done by a local vision training clinic for free. GP can refer you.
