we seem to be in yet another downward spiral as she finds it harder and harder to deal with the requitements of 5th grade (yr6). Anyone else live with this pattern of sn child doing relatively well and then things all going wrong for a while...because as I see the crash coming my heart sinks so heavily

Am sorry to read its like this - this scenario tends to happen when the child is not adequately supported by school or it's educational body for whatever reason.

Presumably you have approached school already - what has been their response?.

I hadn't thought of it like that. School are well aware how things are going - we had a conference and they told me - only they seem short on practical solutions. I think when things have been going well they try to make her more independent - get her ready fro secondary school etc. When things go well I sometimes wonder if its because we are all bolstering her up. I feel like I have tons of questions but no answers

I suffer slightly form feeling really grateful that she has a statement and gets the support she does...so many people seem to struggle to get any help at all.

The first term of year 6 was dire for my chap. The pressure is really on staff and kids to get good leaving results and it is push push push. Also my son really realised that he was very different to everyone else and felt he could not do the work. he was also worried about going on to secondary. As soon as we and thus he discovered there were alternatives to the mainstream secondary - private SEN schools he perked up and then did really well. I think this time of year is really hard My chap gets overwhelmingly tired (although he has just grown a centremeter in two weeks!) and the dark and gloom and not being able to run around and loon around on the trampoline gets to him. There is also a lot of changes around now with the run up to Christmas and stuff and that has an affect.

Hope it gets better soon.
