Primary/Infant schools in wokingham for boy with SEN

Hello!

My son will start school in 2013 and I am getting anxious looking a good fit school for him. His difficulties are mainly speech, fine motor and physical stability. He is very social, no behavioral problems and willing to cooperate but very mellow. I am in wokingham but not in catchment of any good school, we are looking to move near walter infant but don't know if it is a good fit for him, all the good schools don't seem to have any SEN children Anyway that school told me that I can not visit the school unless I am in catchment so I can't decide if its a fit for my son. Radstock, Hawthorns, Lambs Lane, All Saints ... I am so confused ... very difficult to visit the schools as they don't have time to schedule individual visits ... one of them even told me "our time is precious". I have applied for statement but it will take few more months. Any recommendation/advice is appreciated.

Hello! I have just come across your post as I am in a very similar position to you! I also live in Wokingham and although I live in catchment of Walter Infants, I do not know the school very well and what it's SEN provision is like as my older son goes to Hawthorns. My younger son is also due to start in 2013 and has severe speech problems. We would like him to go to Highwood School in Woodley as this has a specialist speech and language unit. If you have not been to any of the recent Council meetings, you may not know that you are highly unlikely to get into a school out of your catchment area. However, if you get a Statement for your son, you will be able to get written into the Statement the school you would like him to go to. Maybe try ringing the schools again and mention that your child will have a statement, so you need to look at all possible options. I am also keen to find a good school for SEN as I still have to apply for a school for 2013 as we haven't even started on the statementing process yet (I'm waiting for a Paediatric assessment). Maybe you should also try ringing the council SEN department and ask them for advice. Hope this all helps!

Also remember, just because a school is 'outstanding', it doesn't necessarily mean it will be the best place for a child with SEN. Different schools have different priorities.
