Is the UK a racist country

Hi there, just wanted to get your views on this. I've been following the Tory hustings and am very shocked that people prefer Truss to Sunak when clearly, he's more intelligent and capable.
It makes me wonder if racism is at play and people can't handle a non-white PM in this country?

Hmmm no doubt there is an element of racism in the way some Tory members will vote, but I do think it was his wife's tax affairs that really did for him. It made him look like he was playing the system and offended people's sense of fairness. I know it was legal and he wasn't the only one, but he was in a position of making decisions about how to use tax to fund public spending. So his own tax affairs should have been as straightforward and relatable as possible. It really made him look bad. It's a shame as he seems the brightest of the bunch. Not that I will vote Tory. But I'd prefer him to Truss.

Britain is one of the least racist places n the world. Of course, there are people who make their living by saying everyone is racist but no need to believe the nonsense. We are one of the most tolerant societies. If you don’t think so, go to some of the places I have been!

been and done it. · 22/08/2022 20:36

There are plenty of racists all over the world. I live in a pretty multi racial area and there are plenty of other race racists here believe me. They bring out the race card as and when it suits as is now apparent with RS. IMO I think we are a pretty good nation when it comes to integration..I've met a few English racists but no more than any other race racists. I'm not sure Mr Sunak is quite of our world..he mentioned in an interview some time ago he didn't actually know any working class people and all the hypocritical debacle with his wife and his green card issue..not sure he's the right person for the job, absolutely nothing to do with his ethnicity.

Well said.

kittyloverly · 22/08/2022 20:58

@CanDo92 Why are you on a board for minority races? To teach them that racism does not exist? You're incredibly self entitled, Karen.

Should we be thankful that they're here as it could be worse elsewhere. As someone who has lived abroad, I've faced more racism in the UK than in the US, Japan, Singapore and Australia. Places where I've lived and worked.

Shame on you. I hope you don't have children, can't imagine what you'd be teaching them.

kittyloverly · 22/08/2022 21:02

lunar1 · 22/08/2022 20:07

There is something seriously wrong with your thinking @CanDo92.

It's absolutely disgusting that you feel entitled to minimise peoples lived experience of racism.

Why the hell does it matter how it compares to other countries? He's been here 20 years, our children have never lived anywhere else.

Please tell me what else you think of justifiable because it could be worse? It's not distorting the situation in the UK, it's a fact of life for mine and many other families.

I hope you are a kinder person in real life than you are on your keyboard.

There's really something wrong with this poster, I agree with you. Probably has a swastika tattooed on herself.

What places? I'd like to know as I'm very well traveled, and have lived in quite a few countries. I'd honestly like to know.

@kittyloverly Japan is a particularly racist society so I don't think you are being truthful. I don't know about the others.

I don't disagree with that, they're homogeneous but I did find them incredibly polite and easy to work with. Did not face the same racism that I face here.

The overwhelming majority of Islamist terror attacks in the UK were perpetrated by born and bred Brits. Newsflash - English does not equal white, it's a nationality.

Oh and as to "white English people" travelling to far-off lands and blowing shit up, did Iraq and Afghanistan somehow escape your notice?

lunar1 · 22/08/2022 22:27

It's easy to see where racist children get their views reading some of these replies.

Indeed English most definitely does not equal white, England is an incredibly multi-cultural country. But we are talking about racism, which relates to a persons race, not necessarily their nationality. And I might be wrong but from the example the OP gave (Rishi Sunak), she was specifically talking about white people being racist towards non-white people. And while I am sure there are many racist people in England, my examples were to reassure her that England is no more racist than any other country.
With regards to governmental military action or war, I think you're grasping really to attribute that to racism. Simplistic thinking in the extreme. In fact the current war is between two countries of primarily white ethnicity (Ukraine/Russia).

vimtokisses · 23/08/2022 09:39

I'm sure the op got what they wanted out of this thread. I hope it makes a recent article.

Amrapaali · 23/08/2022 09:40

I cant recall a time recently where white English people have travelled to other countries and blown up trains, planes or buildings, or stabbed people for not being white or Christian.

Jeez @Ohsugarhoneyicetea I really don't know where to begin with this.

White (including English) people have travelled to other countries and waged wars on others for not being white enough or Christian enough. Beginning with the Crusades right down to oppressing, enslaving and killing the "savages" and the "heathen" natives, trust me white on non-white violence has been going on for more than a thousand years.

Whenever someone mentions slavery, the usual line is trotted out "Oh but the Arabs already had slaves, African nations already were enslaving each other blah blah". Probably true, but it took a very unique European capitalism and cruelty to actually trade in slaves on an industrial level.

(See other races can do the "it wasn't as bad with us" shtick as well!)

ANyway I am not so one dimensional to see white people only through the prism of racial inequality but please do read up on at least Wikipedia history before coming out with bloopers like these.

Amrapaali · 23/08/2022 09:43

Have there been many white candidates for Prime Minister in India or Pakistan lately?

I really don't understand this question. Why would there be? Is there a big enough white population in India or Pakistan to necessitate white representation? The bigger the presence, the stronger the representation. It is as simple as that.

And FWIW there was actually an Italian born woman who almost became PM of India.

Racism exists all over the world in different forms. I’ve had people wanted to cut my throat. Telling me I should die. Refusing to serve me. I’ve had to go around with armed protection. I’ve seen different tribes hack each other to bits with machetes. I don’t suppose that’s racism? The problem is we just think of racism with tunnel vision according to our own little world and not the wider picture

bubblebabble · 23/08/2022 14:29

@Malie so is your point that we minority races should not complain? We should be grateful that whites are so good to us in the UK, where we live? That white people have it harder when they go traveling?

It’s honestly disgusting to tell someone from a minority race what racism is. Especially on a post on a board meant for South Asians to talk about their experiences.

OP posts:
bubblebabble · 23/08/2022 14:34

Yes. It’s very scary. I find it disturbing that they’ve come to a board that’s meant to be a safe space for a minority race to lecture them on how they have it good so they shouldn’t complain about racism in the UK. Also apparently white women have had it worse…LOL!!
Reminds me of historical pieces I’ve read of when slave owners used to tell their slaves they were lucky.
I wonder if white women do the same on boards meant for other minority groups? Does anyone know?

OP posts:
bubblebabble · 23/08/2022 14:38

Also, least racist is still racist. So not sure why this is even a point. We still face discrimination here. Looking at developed countries, the UK fares very poorly on the list that someone posted on this board? Especially when taking into account that it used to be a former empire?

Yes I’ve seen this a lot on black mumsnetters and I think I recognise some usernames. Wonder what attracts them to these boards. It’s like as a south Asian I go on black mumsnetters and deny south Asians can be racist towards black people or try to shut down any convo around it.
We listen and learn to do better but white superiority is on a different level.
They have to be everywhere, denying or minimising it all.
