I think the monarchy should be abolished, apologies doled out and the ridiculous wealth they've amassed from other countries and the taxpayer should be donated to the public, to restore public institutions which have been bankrupted in the last decade.

The worst part is trying to explain what a monarchy is to my kids, because it clearly elevates some above the rest of us, and I do not want to advocate for unequality.

We should become a republic already.

Yes, I agree.
Can't see the point of Monarchy in this day and age. They should apologise for all the crimes they committed in the past. There are countries still suffering from their atrocities, regions at war, killing each other because of their actions.

The monarchy is what my mum would call an old perungaaya dabba. An empty asafoetida jar but still smells quite strong.

The monarchy and to a large extent the peerage, honours system, pomp and grandeur etc are like these empty dabbas. Glitz and glamour but no substance.

Almost every country in the world has had monarchies at some point but the fierceness with which Britain clings to its bemuses me.

Maybe there is no other strong national identity to define you. Find this in English particularly rather than the Scots, Irish or Welsh.

Beautifully put! V outdated in a multicultural Britain.

Ambivalent- don’t mind the Queen, wouldn’t want the job. However so outdated. Harks back to empire and glory days even in names of the honours. OTOH another layer of politics doesn’t appeal either. That’s not because they would not be competent just that a figurehead is in some ways easier.

I think the Monarchy should be abolished and for this country to be republic of Britain and N Ireland.

This is without prejudice to induvidual members of the Monarchy, I just think its an unnecessary faff.

The cost of living rise and the fact that not a lot was said to support people through the cost of living crisis.

People are starving themselves for days on end to pay bills and kids going to school with no winter coats.

So Queen's speech has made me unapologetically pro republic.

Madbadandusuallysad · 02/06/2022 21:38

I don't really have a problem with the Queen as a person, but I do think the whole institution is outdated.

This is brilliant. Well put!

Yep, there’re some amazing republics out there we could emulate - USA, China, Russia, North Korea, Pakistan…

brighteyesburninglikefire · 20/07/2022 23:54

I agree, the monarchy should be abolished, all loot returned, apologies made and compensation. Pipe dreams though, there are plenty of apologists, even amongst our own. Hate this thing where Asians are expected to just forgive and take the higher road. I'll take the low road thanks.
( feeling very samosa spicey today)
