Hello,

My little girl is 11 months old on Monday! - she doesn’t respond to her name or point yet and Google has sent me into ? Autism!

Is it too early to tell?

my little girl is extremely happy, she babbles A LOT of the time.

she enjoys games like Peek-A-Boo and will always pick up my hand and put it on her toys or use my fingers and put it on the textured parts of her ‘That’s not my’ books whenever I am sat with her.

If my parents come round for childcare, she will crawl down the hall extremely quickly to the door laughing and smiling, if friends come to the door she will smile straight away- even if strangers smile from an distance she will too!!!

She is almost walking, she can climb the stairs!

She claps and waves, but her waving is extremely hit and miss ( I put this down to lockdown and not having anyone to wave hello or goodbye too! )

She’s not yet pointing as said above, but I put that down to me not doing a lot of pointing ( I feel like a bad mum )

When we go and see her in the morning she is very happy to see us...

She has eye contact, it’s not all of the time ( she’s often distracted or up to mischief ) but it is there & she will look when I’m singing to her! ( if I’m singing twinkle twinkle, she will look too and from my hands ‘twinkling’ and my face )

She just doesn’t respond to her name, maybe a few times???

My partner thinks it’s me over thinking again ( I am a sufferer of PND and General Anxiety Disorder ) - but Google has sent me into a pit of worry...

Can anyone reassure me?

I think it is normal. My 2.4 year old doesn't respond to his name.

Yes I would say this is too young as mine is still not responding and he is just over 2! I would of course keep monitoring progress and keep an eye out for other red flags....

Are you worried about your child? I must admit mine is over 2 and I've had sleepless nights over it......

Have you had her hearing tested?

Anxio · 13/02/2021 21:07

I'm waiting for the hearing test.....we have been referred just awaiting for dates which could be a while :-(

Have you had a questionnaire from your health visitor for her 12 month check (if you are in the UK). It’s very early to be getting worried.

The other thing to have in mind with pointing is that the classic one finger sticking out is a mature point. If you offer her two things to chose between does she gesture or reach a hand to the one she wants? That flat hand reaching out is the start of pointing.

I know it’s hard not but try to not fall into google worry holes. It’s good you are getting her ears checked and it’s always worth asking a Heath visitor or your doctor if you are worrying about something. But that said kids really are so individual and develop in their own way at their own pace and the milestones are what is typical and there is usually a pretty big window for all of the “skills” they acquire.

@MumOfHals how is ur daughter?

MumOfHals · 14/04/2022 15:27

@amankaura - Hiya.. My daughter is now 2 years old and she is very much a chatter box and responds extremely well to her name now... unless she is doing something naughty.

She seemed to suddenly (like a light switch) become aware and using all the words in the world. It seems as though, she was taking it all in and just took a while to display all she learnt.

Are you worried about your little one?!
