I don’t want to do a 9-5 for much longer

I’m now 30. Ideally I just want to work for myself. I don’t come from a family of millionaires or parents with an awareness of business acumen. I’d love to start, ideally online. I just don’t know where or how to begin. Would anyone know how to help me in terms of ideas on this? Where can I learn or how would I start?

I don’t want anything with a product to sell. I was thinking a recruitment agency or even a consulting agency. I did a training day for a Pilates franchise but I didn’t like the idea of the business model. I want something I can scale and build clients with. I want to keep working but I finish work at 2:30/3pm so I would be willing to work a few hours into the evening sorting out my business.

I feel pathetic asking for guidance but I want to start somewhere.

Look at the skills you have to offer - admin, finance, marketing, whatever - and maybe try going freelance doing that for small businesses.

What research have you done so far?

listen to My First Million podcasts - they have episodes dedicated to business ideas & interviews with successful people

I think you will be in for a shock if you think building and scaling a business will be easier than a cushy 9-5. Especially when you don't know what it is you want to do. Willing to work a couple of hours in the evening is naive at best. The grass isn't greener, I can assure you. "I just want to be self employed" isn't sufficient.

I would work for it but in the day of social media and being able to scale a business faster it doesn’t have to be a 24/7 round the clock business

@gloriousday34 “I was thinking a recruitment agency or even a consulting agency”

consulting in what?

Also, what do you know about being a recruiter? Is that your area of experience?

If you think you can use social media to scale a business that gives you stable employment without any work, you are more naive than I thought. Perhaps watch less TikTok.

I run two businesses and it is relentlessly hard. Not really any proper holidays etc. It is a labour of love. You need to start with your skill set. What are you passionate about? As you need to really love it
