Which free Making Tax Digital package is best?

Just that really. I have a rental property and do some private tutoring, so have been doing a tax return every year. I don't have an accountant. I just do it myself. Now I've got to look at this MTD for 26/27 and I would like to use a free package if possible. There are several coming online but I have no idea which.

Can anyone help?

I have the same question! Did you come to any conclusions?!

StationJack · 01/04/2026 12:33

I use FreeAgent.

I pay for an accountant! I have a few rental properties and was audited by HMRC a few years ago which was a miserable and lengthy experience. I'd rather the accountant did it as that way I know everything is accurate.

I am an accountant (!) although non practicing and haven’t for years! But I do the very simple accounts on Excel for DH so need to sort something out quickly!

I'm a practicing accountant. The only free software I'm familiar with is FreeAgent, only free via a NatWest or Mettle bank account though. But it is excellent. Other good ones, but around £7 a month, are QuickFile (nb not quickbooks) and Xero. Both the latter will let you do the two separate submissions you'll need for the rental and the self employment. I'm not sure if FreeAgent supports more than one business type in one subscription, though it wouldn't surprise me if it did.

I think there is an add on (or an app)for excel

I caved and paid. Sage is great, and a good offer for 12 months.

Easy to learn.

If you open a business account several banks, such as NatWest, offer software for free. Monzo (who I use for my self-employed income) also has just launched their own feature compatible with HMRC.

Clearbooks free works for me, seems to do what I need with minimal hassle.

I’ve actually just starting Xero which is cheap and fine, though I’m exempt from MTD until next year as I live overseas. Xero is £1.68 for 6 months at the moment, them £7 a month after that.
