Hi

I have worked as a HR Consultant for 10+ years but will be taking a year out to have a baby next year. I would like to have more flexibility in terms of my hours, but I earn just over £60,000 FTE (pro-rated down as I work 4 days) so have a guaranteed income every month.

I know from working on investigations / handbooks etc that I could charge a good hourly rate, but are there any consultants on here that find they don’t get a steady stream of income? I’d have to secure a few retainer clients as well as ad-hoc work, so just weighing up if it would be worth switching from paid employment.

thank you ☺️

I’d recommend joining HR Freelancers Facebook page and asking your questions there. The lady that runs the page also regularly puts on free events about how to start up and where to find your clients etc. I’m connected to a few self employed freelance HR Consultants who do manage successfully but it’s an ongoing challenge to find and retain clients (as it is in many businesses.)
