Setting up a consulting business

Grateful for any ideas from the community!

I’ve been in my field for about 20 years and am now at Director level but in a low paid industry, so getting paid less than others with my title.

I’d like to set up by myself to have more flexibility but I honestly don’t know where/how to start! I’ve evaluated RFPs for consultants and managed their contracts for years, I’m just apprehensive about making the jump.

Has anyone who’s done it got any advice on what my first steps should be?

It depends on lots of things like where will your business come from, do you need a website or will LinkedIn suffice?

I’d imagine most of it would come from business development conversations, networking events, RFP/RFQs or referral. I could make a website relatively easily, but I’m also quite active on LinkedIn.

In that case yes do your website. I did consulting for 7 years. I really enjoyed it. I still consult now but a different industry. I didn't do my website right away as it was all word of mouth through my LinkedIn network. I set up as a limited company with my accountant. I was vat registered in the year but don't need to do that right away
