Newly self employed and 30 hours childcare

Currently a SAHM. My LO will start school nursery in September. It was always my intention that when he went I'd look at opening a business on Etsy but thought I'd still have to pay the extra 15 hours. Looking at the government website it says that newly self employed people can earn less and still be eligible for 30 hours, this is for the first 12 months. Anyone have any experience of this? Do you still have to earn a certain amount? I obviously have no idea how successful I'll be.

I don't know for sure, but usually a twelve month allowance is given where earning amounts aren't considered for the newly self employed. I really wouldn't expect to be earning the required amount after twelve months though unless you have a really desirable and unique product offering, so you'll need to consider what you'll do after that.

@DelilahBucket Thanks, I don't expect to be earning much immediately like you say. I just wondered if there's a certain amount under the threshold that you'd need for the first 12 months. Like if I only got 10 sales, that surely can't be considered enough for a years childcare?! Seems confusing.

He'll be in full time school after a year so it won't matter then. I'll be looking for another part time job once he's settled in anyway, unless I have amazing success on Etsy, which I doubt 😂

You can apply for it as soon as you have a unique taxpayer code which you can get by registering as self employed, before you're due a tax return.

what will happens if you don't earn £7,904 that year since you opened your store? Should you gave back the amount paid the goverment paid towards the nursery?
