Review anxiety

How do small independent business owners deal with reading negative comments about themselves online?

It gives me such anxiety that I try to avoid reading anything that comes through. I literally get palpitations when a review notification comes through.

Any advice or coping strategies would be appreciated. It just seems so personal when your business is so small as the negativity can only be pointed at one person and that is ME.

You work out what you can learn from it and never respond immediately. Always wait a day before issuing a factual, emotionless response to bad reviews. It does get easier with time. If you are getting a lot then there is clearly a problem. You can't please everyone, but the vast majority should be leaving positive reviews. Focus on those.
