How to get the most from a sling with 12 week old?

I hired a sling a few weeks ago but I'm not sure I'm getting the most out of it iyswim? I tend not to use it on the school run as it just seems easier to stick the car seat on the pushchair (I live too far from school to walk) but use it when I go into the school so I have free hands to do stuff with other DC.

What do you use your sling for?

My dd is nearly 2 now but when she was tiny I used it so I could be hands free to do things around the house and also she napped well in it
