Manduca or ergo for really big 8mth baby

I'm looking for a really strong and structured sling for my back. I don't want to try a wrap sling as I had the Moby when he was a newborn and didn't like it very much.

He's completely grown out of the baby Bjorn and I'm running around after a toddler so I need a back sling.

I was recommended both Manduca and ergo slings, but when I went on amazon to buy them they both said up to 20kg. I'm pretty sure that's what my baby Bjorn says and he's completely grown out of that.

Unfortunately the next sling library session is in sept, but I need the sling for our holiday next week. So I'm just going to make a rash purchase on amazon.

I suppose I'm asking are the Manduca and ergo ones suitable for big babies/toddlers? As I'd like to keep using it for about a year.

Any info gratefully received!

I've said it before (under a different NN) and I'll say it again:

I love my ergo! Bought it when DS was 5 months old and used it almost every day since. He's now 2.5 and 12kg and I'm still just about carrying him (between him walking).

The bonus with the ergo is the zip pocket which I could fit a sandwich bag of wipes and a spare disposable nappy, as well as a tiny colouring book, crayons and some snacks.

The back is shorter than other brands, but DS is short it still works beautifully for us.

Beware of fakes. Check the seller carefully and expect to pay at least £80 (I promise you'll get your money's worth).

We bought an ergo when dd1 was a baby, which was then used for her and dd2 interchangably, particularly notably when she was five and a half as we were in italy with no car and were a three-mile walk from the railway station. Now whilst i'll admit she was not the heaviest 5 year old in the world she still looked pretty crazy. and needless to say dp carried her, not i.

And there is no way on earth anyone could carry a 20kg child in a baby bjorn, i'm sure you could with an ergo. They come HIGHLY recommended by me!

Another vote for ergo - they are fab and you can easily carry a large toddler in one. They're really easy to take out with you and v comfy. You'll get loads of use out of it and they are worth every penny!

I've had 2 years use out of mine so far. I used it literally daily for the first year, so 365 times and at the very least weekly in the second year, so a total of 415 times.

I paid about £85 for it. So that's about 20p per use?

Or to calculate its weekly cost is about 80p/week (used every week for 2 years).

Used it way more than the expensive pushchair(s) we also bought!

It mostly comes down to what feels comfortable on you as the fit is slightly different. So if you get the ergo and it's not quite right then you could sell it after your holiday (they go for close to retail on the sling Facebook groups) and try something else at the sling library when you're back.

The Manduca also has more adjustability - the straps go shorter for petite wearers, and the straps can either be worn crossed or straight. Because it has 2-way buckles it is easier to adjust when on. The adjustable height body panel for the baby is also useful.

I run a sling library and would say that the Manduca is on the whole more popular than the Ergo - although some prefer the Ergo, the majority prefer the Manduca.

Either will be perfectly comfy for the next year. I see a lot of people who find the Bjorn doesn't work beyond 4-8 months, but can use the Ergo or Manduca or similar until 2 and beyond.

We love our ergo. Used daily with firstborn until she wanted to walk everywhere at 2. Now with second child I use a pushchair more (everything goes in the space underneath to save carrying!!) but still use the ergo for walks. Would easily carry up to 2 and beyond.

Ergo has a shorter back so if you have a long/tall LO I'd go with the Manducca.

But they do retain price so could sell on if LO outgrows it. Keep receipt. S many fakes about that people want proof if selling on.

My nearly 4 year old (16kgs) still fits in the Ergo. We sold his buggy when he was 2.5yrs old but I still use the Ergo if he's ill or we are in London/cities where I know he'll get trampled on on the tube!

Hmmm thanks, I haven't ordered yet as a few reviews on amazon said it was a fake. Will look up Manduca now as a comparison.

I'm about to click 'buy now' for the Manduca sling!

Thanks for all your comments, it looks like the Manduca has the same ergonomic benefits as the ergo but doesn't seem to be any 'fake' issues in amazon with this one.
