What are the differences between different makes of mei tai slings?

I have heard babyhawk and ellaroo mentioned, but have also seen mei Taus from independent sellers on etsy etc.

Are there any differences between brands as it were? Or is it about colour preference?

Any recommendations? I'm looking for my first 'proper sling' I tried on a babyhawk at a sling meet today & it seemed very comfy but I only wore it for a few minutes. Have been using a babasling, that I like but after an hour or so my shoulder starts to ache!

All mei tais are definitely not created equal. Although essentially they are similar construction (body panel with 4 straps) there is huge variation in how good they are and how well constructed. I run a sling library and have seen people come along with all sorts - from the very good to the imo downright unsafe (poor stitching, straps not well attached, use of weak fabrics and no reinforcing), or just unsuitable - such as the mei tai where the body panel proportions and strap attachment was just so wrong that it was impossible to wear with a baby in it and have it fit properly.

For that reason, unless you are able to see something in person and really know what you're looking for, I'd go with a recognised brand. It will also be much easier to sell on if/when you're done with it. I'd check out www.naturalmamas.co.uk for sale boards as well as ebay. Some great stuff for sale on www.thebabywearer.com if you can cope with international shipping too.

If you want to buy new, I really rate Melkaj mei tais - some UK retailers stock them, or you can buy direct from the maker in Poland. More supportive than a babyhawk due to the additional waist padding etc.
