Which is better BabyBjorn Original or BabyBjorn Active?

Hi
I'm debating which baby carrier to buy out of the BabyBjorn Original or BabyBjorn Active. Does anyone have any advice on either?

Avoid them both. They are both rubbish. Have a look at moby wraps or Kari me. Or a mai te.

Are either of those the new one that holds the baby in a better position? The problem with Baby Bjorns is they hold the baby so it dangles by the crotch - but I think they recently brought out a new one that holds the baby in a seated position, much better for their hips and spine. Also choose one that carries the weight on your waist/hips rather than shoulders or it will be uncomfortable for you.

Personally though, there are much better carriers on the market.

OK, I think it's this one the Baby Bjorn Comfort - see the baby's legs are held wide apart and supported and the weight it on the bottom.

Something like a Beco or Ergo is similar though but also allows you to carry the baby on your back later.

The Active spreads the weight a little more but still not a great sling. I had Baby Bjorn first time round and didn't really use it that much, and had stopped by 4 months or so. Bought an ergo later and used to back carry quite a lot.

Second time around I had a kari-me from birth which was great, DD pretty much lived in it for first 4 months. I had a mei tei too (which I'll admit I bought mainly because it was pretty!). Still use the ergo sometimes now that DD is 2.8yrs, but wouldn't be so keen to use it for newborn...

The Beco comes with a newborn insert that makes it fit babies under 7kg.

Neither. Baby Bjorns are awful.

We had one with DS and it gave me the most awful back ache every single time I used it. I hated it.

Had a Moby wrap with DD and used it loads more in total comfort. It's softer, more adaptable, allows for more holds, far more snuggly, suitable for a wider age range, easier to wash, comes in more colours too.... just so much better

Get a soft-structured carrier (eg an Ergo, but you also have to buy a newborn insert, or a Patapum baby) instead.

Or you could buy my rarely used BabyBjorn + cover.

AchtungBaby · 13/09/2011 22:11

I wish I'd asked MN before buying my BabyBjorn Grin!

DS and I product tested many carriers and slings for a well known baby equipment company who were developing their own at the time. I loved the BB Active and have just bought one for DC2 due soon.

PhyllisDiller · 14/09/2011 15:10

The Ergo is far more comfortable than even the BB Active, I had the active with DD and it was a killer on my back. I would definitely avoid the active (unless you see mine for sale on Gumtree...I'm joking, obviously).

Paschaelina · 14/09/2011 15:15

My TK Maxx had a Close sling for £19.99 today (usually retail at £50+). Much better idea for newborn than any BB.

pootlebug · 17/09/2011 11:57

Neither - the Manduca is much comfier from birth and will last a lot longer, and you can do back carries too. Or the ergo with the infant insert. Or the Beco Butterfly II.

Or a stretchy wrap if that appeals.

splashymcsplash · 18/09/2011 23:48

I have a moby which is so much better for all the reasons just stated.

Avoid baby bjorn!!

Id avoid a BB - backache almost guaranteed and will only last a couple of months before they feel too heavy. Bad carrying position too.

Sadly they are the only "sling" people tend to have heard of so people lean towards them rather than a more suitable one :(
