I was inspired to join slimming world after a friend lost over 6 stone.
I didn't have a huge amount to lose .... 17lbs, which I have been trying to lose for years, using calorie counting.
The first 2 weeks I lost 3.5 lb each week, then the dreaded week when the scales didn't move.
This week I've lost another 2lb, which means I'm just over half way to my goal.
I'm so happy, not just because of the weight loss, but the massive improvement the balance of what I am eating. This I didn't expect to happen so easily.
My alcohol intake is a third of what it was, and I am loving a stir fry. I've even been camping and made syn free meals on my camping stove!
My habit of eating ice cream by the tub full has been broken, and replaced with no fat natural yogurt with fruit mixed in.
It's truly amazing.
I'm just writing this for anyone who thinks that this doesn't work... it really can work.
The app is wonderful for logging meals, and making me accountable.
What I'd like to know is how likely is it that I will need to lower my syns allowance for the last few lbs?
At the moment I'm on 15 per day, but finished the week with 25 syns unused.
I actually went Thursday and Friday with no syns at all and didn't feel deprived, but I had 20 syns yesterday and today.

I fell out with slimming world long ago but, one thing I used to do when because I am a big ice cream fan is freeze a muller light! Get it out 5 minutes before you want it and it’s similar to an ice cream!

Abc1weabc1 · 12/05/2025 06:42

Brilliant idea, thank you 😊

Yes it is nice to make frozen yoghurt bark with fruit and at Easter I sprinkled over a crushed up biscuit with tiny mini eggs and I got so many loves/likes and it felt like a right treat (but have often wondered if the frozen bark is copyright SW)
Why have SW never done a dessert range to accompany its meals (for those who chose that route)

There use to be a gynae nurse on weigh in who would say the bigger Muller lights were ‘food of the devil’ (wouldn’t say just how though) ironically in hospital if you chose yoghurt they serve thick creamy muller ones you can’t get in supermarkets. Plus the full fat milk 😢tried to have black coffee but told please don’t have black consistently you need milk products and I can’t fight them with a picc line knowing they put supplemental food products down it.

I do/had done both injections and SW together - the trouble now is SW cannot lie detector its members so I don’t believe it is winning the fight. Plus there scales are far from cutting edge so disabled people are excluded.

Today to buy the new hi fi bars which I was looking forward to SW have made me spend £20 on one month membership as they know I’ve not made it to group and have to be online member to access their shop as I’m unsure when I can get to a physical class - was so, so tempted to make the ‘starting’ weight much higher so I can fool myself next time if/when/how I can get on scales.

Sorry for the rant.

I think you can get the hifi bars in Iceland.

Abc1weabc1 · 18/05/2025 20:43

I would love them to do a desert range.
I've lost another 3lb this week. Only 5lb to go now

I am so inspired to read this!

please can I join you? I have 15lb to lose so a similar amount. I am going to start today!

Abc1weabc1 · 11/06/2025 02:29

You're welcome to join me!
I'm 1lb from my target weight but not entirely sure that target weight is correct.
How do you actually know???
The acceptable range using bmi is huge.

Group session and keeping attendance even when goal reached is key to slimming world

so msny people stop going when the hit goal and then slip

its free anyway once you reach goal

Lottie2000 · 17/06/2025 21:24

I did SW a few years ago and you’re right it definitely works if you log what you’re eating and syn it when you need to.
When I achieved my target I was mindful that you have to stick to pretty much a SW diet with the occasional treat.
Good luck with your weight in 🤞🏻

Abc1weabc1 · 07/07/2025 08:30

I thought I'd update.
I lowered my goal weight, and I am now 1lb from target.
Last week was a little experiment, as I haven't been using all of my syns previously and this week decided to use more to see what happened.
Amazed that I lost 2lb taking me to within 1lb of goal weight.
I absolutely will be sticking with slimming world when I reach goal. Making myself accountable has changed everything.
I am definitely looking forward to adding in a few treats.
Was wondering if one day a week off plan but sticking to 1500 calories for that day would be the way to do it.
I might give it a try and will update on here.
Has anyone else tried this?
Or if not very interested in what you changed to maintain rather than lose.

well done!

Hi @Abc1weabc1 well done on your weight loss so far. Sounds like you've been doing amazing 😊

In terms of your syn allowance. You won't actually reduce it when you get closer to your target. However, I am sure you get extra syns on some days once you are at target. Plus extra healthy extras. Do you go to a group? Your consultant will be able to tell you more 🙂

Abc1weabc1 · 07/07/2025 19:33

I need to have that conversation. I honestly never thought I'd reach target though.
Extra syns sounds fantastic.
Thank you for your reply

Another update....
I lowered my goal weight again and I am about 2 and a half pounds away from success..... but this last bit is so difficult.

I am being really determined this week, I have just done an online shop for all the good things!

I will update at the end of the week. Has anyone done anything drastic at this point to reach goal, or do I just need to be patient?

Amazing, well done! Can I ask how much you've lost in total now? I keep thinking about starting but haven't gone for it yet

i lost 2 stone last year between september and xmas with SW. Then stopped going to sessions and managed to lose another half a stone by mid feb. I’ve now put 2 stone back on

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/09/2025 16:25

Well done @Abc1weabc1!!

I would strongly recommend continuing to go to group and at least, loosely, continue to follow the SW principles, as I think this does help you to maintain. I’ve always made the mistake of not doing this. Thinking of starting again, hence why I clicked on your post.

Abc1weabc1 · 13/09/2025 02:26

Yes, I've completely changed my eating habits and have no intention of going back to what I was doing before.
The hardest part for me was being off work during the summer holidays. My routine and eating is much more structured when I'm at work .
I gained about 4 lb during 3 weeks I spent in Australia with family. I found the fruit really expensive over there and eating less fruit really messed things up.
This week I have been busy and am currently well under my syns for the week. I haven't read the book yet about maintaining so I'm not sure how many extra syns I'm allowed at this point. I will do some reading over the weekend.

So I've found my first criticism of slimming world, although I'm open to the idea that I am the problem.
I am now a target member, but there is no way on the app to change to either of the 3 routes you go down in order to discover which option you need to maintain.
I am aiming for route B which is the middle ground.... a couple of extra her A or B per day, and around 10-15 extra syns one or two days per week.
This is a nightmare to calculate on the app as for example if I have an extra hex B its added as syns which then makes me feel way over.
Last weigh in i had lost another 1lb below target.
My consultant says there is no way of adjusting this on the app which I feel disappointed about.
This week I've only had 5 syns over my normal for weight loss and that includes the one day I had an extra hex b.
I suppose I just need to not record the extra hex a or b per day???
Any target members here to advise.
Any help much appreciated.

Target member for two years

And I have to put hand in the air and declare Ive never counted syns

I use the app to scan processed foods and that's about it

I eat from the free and speed 99% of the time so when I do go off plan it doesn't matter

This past week - I weigh in on Saturday - My usual go to of a large crusty roll, and big packet of crisps ( that's my trigger food so its a one off, one day a week )

On plan zero syns evening meal

Sunday - on plan - zero syns

Monday Fish and chips eaten out for lunch - on plan zero syns tea/supper

Tuesday - Friday - on plan meals - zero syns

But I've had a bit of a comfort munching habit this week ( health scare ) and biscuits and chocolate have found their way into my belly - lots compared to what I would normally tuck away , and I stayed the same

Im on the slow loss route for maintaining, so for me it's all about keeping zero syns on the plate and then not being scared to have something off plan when need be.

To maintain you have to keep to the principles of SW for life . All those healthier choices = for life. But at the same time, do not begrudge yourself a meal out , an ice cream on a summers day, a pint of cider or a glass of wine or a slice of cake, just be aware that yes you have had them and choose wisely with your next meal

Ive stayed within the 3lb leeway for the most part. Last year was my 60th and my sister and niece came from Australia and we had a big birthday weekend away and I did gain then - and I stopped going and before I knew it I was clawing back a 7lb gain with Christmas approaching. This year is been about staying within range and learning my boundaries

Being target is a new learning curve. We all know how to lose, but maintenance and living what we throught was a normal life food wise is a whole different ball game. Coming to accept that SW is normal and our old eating habits arent , is challenging , which is why I go every week even though 3 years down the line I couldn't tell you the syn value of anything :)
