I've tried about 4 times and followed the rules to a tee, but it simply doesn't work for me.

Are you following the 1/3 of each and every plate speed rule?

I tried . I was permanently starving, I then couldn’t get over not being allowed a mashed banana. So I’ve quit. I’m concentrating on healthy eating now. I haven’t lost but I’m not gaining or feeling the need to stuff myself and I’m managing to cut down on snacking. I also don’t feel I have to think about food all the time.

Read the science behind SW.. 90% of people that try it end up with an eating disorder.. it does not work.. like you people go.. they stop.. go back ... stop.. and so forth.. my nutritionist says its the worse thing you can do is to join if you're wanting to loose weight.. many call it a cult .

SW is literally designed to get you to keep coming back and back and spending money. Most of the people who run the local classes are obese; that alone should tell you something

It’s a cult -don’t do it! It encourages completely disordered eating.

OP, don't talk about SW on Mumsnet, they hate it and think it's evil.

Personally I'm not sure how an eating plan consisting of 1/3 veg, lean meats and low fat can be any more evil than calorie restriction or strict exercise regimes.

But if it doesn't work for you, you'll need to try something else. And all the "diets don't work you need a lifestyle change" people will march out soon, as if somehow their calorie deficit and avoiding refined sugar isn't a diet 😂

It because you're eating too much food.
Nit because SW "doesn't work". It does work. If you. Actually follow the plan and ignore all the crap people make up on SW.

You (like any other eating plan) have to eat to your appetite. Stop when satisfied. Reduce calorie intake by replacing things like pasta with veggies or whatever.

It doesn't work for most people because most people can't make a lifelong change to their diets, because most people are unaware of the reasons they over eat on the first place. That's not the fault of the plan. That's just people..and the fact that SW leaders aren't always the brightest buttons.

The biggest problem with SW and WW are the way people, including leaders, interpret the rules incorrectly. See "you can't eat mashed banana" "avocados are banned" "you can eat a plate full of pasta" etc etc it is crap in that sense, like leaders will go on about "you're not eating enough/starvation mode" etc.

That's because 90% of any population would struggle to lose weight and change their lifelong habits, especially when people have strong emotional ties to food.

Look at adult women and how they talk about food generally. "Oooh I'm being naughty by having cake" "I'm being good with this apple" "oh I'll only have the one sausage, don't want to be greedy" "I deserve a treat, I'll have that chocolate bar" etc

People are emotionally attached to food. Breaking that cycle and thought pattern is difficult.

Yes SW has it's issues, mostly in the way people don't follow it or make up rules etc but importantly because people don't understand why they're overweight in the first place. And, I'm fairness, SW meetings aren't the place to explore that.

Low fat high carb diets aren't very filling and it's easy to overeat on carbs when you're hungry. I know SW works for a lot of people but it's not going to work for everyone so don't beat yourself up but try something else.

@00100001 I completely agree.
At the end of the day it's just a way of eating that reduces your calories, nothing special. Then people blame the 'plan' when they can't keep their noses out of the trough and go back to how they ate before. They see it as a thing they do for 2 months or so, rather than a sensible change for life.
I'm not saying that I follow it but it's not some sort of miracle fix that suddenly makes you put weight back on when you come off it, it's just meant to get you to eat veg, lower sugar and reduce calories. The same as any diet really.

Not sure how being encouraged to measure the cake or sausage as ‘syns’ helps break the emotional thought pattern tbh

How many people do you (does anyone!) know who has lost weight with SW and kept it off.

Of course you are allowed a mashed banana for a certain amount of sins whereas a whole one was free. I distinctly remember having this debate with some incredulity on my part with the consultant at induction on my third attempt with them. I never went back.

I find the advocates of slimming world to be quite fanatic about it. You do you. I concluded it was a load of snake oil.

It really boils my piss how people slate SW on here.

I was obese my whole life, tried all the diets you can name, it wasn't until I joined SW that it all made sense. I lost 6 stone, now my BMI is if the middle of the normal range and I've kept that weight off for nearly 8 years.

It does work if you are willing to change your mindset and stay focused.

The mashed banana and the pasta stories make me laugh

I do go to SW, I follow it very loosely , I am target member, I dont pay.

The idea of syning a banana once its mashed, is to limit the amount of that you eat. Two whole bananas is likely to pretty much fill you, two mashed ones wouldn't fill a crack in your tooth and you will be reaching for something else

Every dietician will tell you to limit fruit that is not in its natural form because whilst fruit is good for you, its also high in sugar and acid and the real benefit of fruit comes from the fibre. NHS England only recommend 1 small glass of juice or smoothie for your 5 a day so is it wrong that SW also say eat fruit whole?

I was a eat as much as I could pasta eater this time last year, seriously I would easily sit and eat a whole packet of pasta, covered in olive oil and parmesan and kid myself it was healthy - olive oil is good for you, parmesan -full of calcium. So I rock up to SW and happy days - shovel in the pasta, eat as much as I wanted, only olive oil is 6 syns a tablespoonful and god alone knows how many syns in the parmesan so I had to choose to change what I ate with the pasta, or go without the glass of wine. So I chose a vegetable based sauce and had the wine :) Because now Im chucking in veggies and tuna or salmon, I cant eat as much pasta, Im getting full on less pasta and because Im adding fish and veg Im eating more nutritious food , and Im still getting a glass of wine :)

Thats how the syn system works. For me no diet that says I cant have a drink is going to work so I choose my syns wisely - wine usually and my meals are made up of what SW calls free or speed foods - low calorie nutritionally rich foods

Even a bacon butty is now a BLT, I shovel in the lettuce and tomatoes and bacon medallions - huge butties - on wholemeal instead of white, no butter or spread - keeps me full and not wanting to eat between meals

OP, in the end, the only thing that will work is long-term change of your diet.

That means stop eating processed foods. Stop eating lots of sweet stuff. Switch to good quality wholemeal bread, pasta & couscous, and brown rice. Limit alcohol to one glass a week.

Cook basic food from scratch, home made stews, soups, casseroles, grilled meat with lots of vegetables. Make time to cook. Buy a slow cooker and batch cook at weekends, freeze portions, then take enough out of the freezer each morning before you go to work.

If you are still hungry after eating, snack on fresh fruit or nuts, or brown bread & oil. Plus moderate exercise every day to push up your metabolic rate. A bit of fast walking will do.

There aren't any short cuts but it's much less expensive than SW.
