how do you lose weight when WFH?

It looks like I could be permanently WFH or at least hybrid.

How do I stop eating everything in the fridge or cupboard?

How do I keep fit when I am at home and at my desk all day?

I am not a gym person. I like dance classes but I can't find anything of interest. Its all things like HIIT (too hard) or clubbercise (I don't like club music). There are no ice rinks, roller rinks, pools or anything like that local. I have a dog, and I walk her. Probably should do more but I don't get a long lunch during the day. Just half an hour.

Any tips to help me stick to the diet and get exercise when at home?

Do you want to lose the weight? Assuming that's a yes, WFH can be a great opportunity to get in control of your own routine if you try and think of it as a positive.

Are you saving any time on commuting - and can you reclaim any of this time for yourself? Obviously depending on other circumstances like childcare etc.

If it's any use, my WFH routine has become - get up early and walk the dog for 45 minutes to an hour.
Lunch time, I do a quick yoga video (youtube - yoga with Adrienne).
After work, as soon as I get up from the desk, it's out the door to meet a friend for a walk or a quick jog. Walking is great exercise and can burn a fair few calories, don't overcomplicate the exercise part. It is time consuming, but time walking is time not spent sitting on the couch eating - that's what I tell myself anyway! I throw on a podcast or some music, or chat to the dog.

Maybe someone else will have food recommendations, but my main rule of thumb is if it's not in the house I can't eat it. If I want a treat badly enough to go to the shop and get it then I think that's probably fair enough! But treat treats as treats, not the cornerstones of your diet Grin

You can do it if you put your mind to it. It's not about being perfect, it's about being consistent and making a realistic plan you can manage. Best of luck!

Go for a run before you start work. Throw away the snacks/don’t buy them.

I have a DD but school will be back next week (Scotland) so that will give me a bit more time to fit in exercise around working.

Having put on a stone during the various lockdowns I've finally got this under control. This is what I've done:

  1. Fake commute - I walk for the times at the start and end of day when I would have been commuting
  2. 15 - 20 minute walk at lunch time
  3. intermittent fasting - this is the clincher! I do 16:8. I only eat between 12 - 8pm and I make sure that I limit my calories in that period (note calories not food types).

Why would you put more weight on wfh? No team biscuits for a start! Build exercise into your day. I walk the kids to school and back ( 3 miles a day) and am going to start a yoga class in my lunch break once a week. Also don't have any crap in....
If there's no chocolate crisps and biscuits in the cupboards you can't eat them.

don't buy "stuff". Buy specifically for what you intend to cook/eat in the -max- next 2 days.
I've been wfh full time since last feb. Lost 5 kg.
No exercise, no classes, pool, etc. Just didn't buy shit.
Ok, did buy shit, but only type that husband/kid like and I hate.

Try and walk as much as you can.
I do walking videos on You Tube that are really good (if I'm unable to get out because of the children) so I try to get 10,000 steps a day in. I don't always but I always think something is better than nothing.
Don't buy sweet snacks and fill up your fruit bowl.
I have worked from home now since the first lockdown and I have put on 2 stone!! I have started Slimming World this week and I am determined to get rid of the excess weight.
When you reach for the snacks think about the long term affects of weight gain... everything in moderation. xx

CampaignToo · 29/08/2021 16:27

The only way for me to keep on top of my weight when wfh is absolutely no snacking. I can't do it sensibly or in moderation, but if I decide no snacking, I can do that.

I did put on over a stone in the first lockdown but that was because wfh combined with 2 young kids at home made it a case of survival! But I'm still wfh and kids are in school/nursery and I've managed to get a good routine. I exercise 5 times a week either early in the morning or around my lunch break. On the days I don't exercise I go for a walk in my lunch and also have time to walk the kids to and from school, which I didn't have time to do before as I needed to drive to the office. Also, I have more time to make better lunches, I used to rely heavily on the canteen whereas now I can plan and make healthy and filling meals. Most importantly I don't buy lots of treats so they just aren't there to eat.

My friend does fake commuting. She previously cycled to work (5 miles each way) so she still does that before she starts work and again when she finishes. Only now she can pick a more scenic route rather than going into the city centre!

I lost weight on Slimming World when wfh - I found it much easier as I could control what I was eating and had time to prepare my meals and snacks as opposed to lugging lunch and breakfast to work (I also do 12:12 or 14:7) or trying to find something relatively healthy in the hospital canteen or shop.
I just made sure there was no rubbish in the house and I knew what I was eating each day, so I wasn’t tempted.Exercise is walking, YouTube videos or the gym. Good luck! Smile

PandoraP · 29/08/2021 18:41

I have lost weight WFH without trying. I find the food I buy when I work in the office and all the temptations and take out coffees just do not exist in my house so have both saved a fortune and lost weight.

Cheekywifey · 26/09/2021 14:06

I make up a packed lunch in the morning as if I was going to the office. That is my limit for the day so no need to go to the fridge
