Why have I lost so little?

Bumbadum · 21/12/2020 20:25

I'm 4 stones over healthy bmi. I stayed within syns. I filled 1/3 of every meal with speed veg or fruit. I can eat so much and I didn't restrict portions..walked 30 mins a day.

Typical day
Hex ss milk
Hex 2 weetabix
1 banana
Snack apple, satsuma, cup of tea, 2 finger kitkat
Lunch
Huge pasta or huge baked potato, tuna and synned mayo or mackerel in tomato sauce with side salad
Snack
Snack a jack or wotsits, fat free cottage cheese and tomatoes or fat free yogurt and frozen berries
Dinner
Rice and chicken diet cola (sw recipe) or a sw curry and rice or sw skewered chicken and oven wedges and salad or lentils dhal and rice.
If i have any syns left id have a highlight 40cals hot choc.

4 weeks like that only lost 3lb. My period is regular and had dc with no fertility issues, dont take any meds, drink 1.5 litres water.

I feel pissed off because if its a portion issue at the end of the day id rather then track calories and eat whatever. Fat free is only bareable because of the carbs and when im keto i lose fast but i feel empty and life becomes so dull and boring. Low carb subs stall me, dont taste the same or end up giving me the shakes from insulin spikes (maltitol im looking at you!).

Im just fed up. The only time i lost weight properly is when i was bulimic. I ate very little and when i binged threw it all up.

Im so tired of this. At my wright i should have dropped 7lb at least by now. Im 30, my metabolism is fine when i do keto or fast 800 i lose quickly. On sw it seems sooooo slow. Id be happy with 2lb a week loss.

I think people who lose on sw must be eating less because evidently my eat til you are full does not work.

It's the carbs.

Huge pasta or huge baked potato, tuna and synned mayo or mackerel in tomato sauce with side salad

This stood out like a sort thumb to me.

What you need to do is swap the quantities - make it a huge salad, and I mean enormous, and have a much smaller portion of pasta or baked potato.

For your evening meal, halve the quantity of carbs and replace with a pile of veg on your plate.

Sorry I didn’t mean my post to offend, it was more a comment on the slimming world programme which OP says she is following.

@samanthajames86

Hi there,

I've heard common stories about this myself and its safe to say that slimming world doesn't work and it's just to make the lazy buggers feel better about themselves rather than working hard to actually lose the weight. Try eating in a calorie deficit and actually exercising, should see better results then.

Hope this helps,

Samantha James

Rubbish. I lost 8 stone in 15 months by following SW and have kept it off for 7 years by following their maintenance plan. The only diffetence being that I followed the old Green plan.

I just wanted to say that your post OP and the replies have really given me a kick up the bum in terms of my eating. I’ve put on a stone over the lockdowns, and am determined that lockdown 3 will be the one where I lose weight rather than gain it. The honest answers here about how much is ok to eat have really helped me, so thanks! Good luck with your weight loss OP. I hope it continues to head in the right direction.

Slimming world sounds so complicated with speed foods and red days and Hex and syns!

OP I'm 18st, I peaked at 19 9 months after giving birth. I need to eat less calories that I use but OMG I NEED to eat. I'm having to learn how not to binge and understand what a reasonable portion is.

Whats helped me is the brocolli test, am I hungry enough to eat brocolli? If not am I hungry for something else- an emotion, boredom etc.

The hunger scale was a breakthrough too, to understand when I'm actually hungry and when I only think I am [[www.dchs.nhs.uk › tools_1-11PDF

It’s not complicated

Red ans green days are old

Speed is basically fruit and veg and should be 1/2 your plate

Ha is dairy so calcium milk cheese etx

Hb is fibre so bread cereal etx

It's too much food! Way too much. That's what I eat on a normal day, and I overeat and gain weight.
Have one medium baked potato and no more than 75-100g (dried) of pasta as the absolute maximum. Bulk out the plate with plenty of salad and steamed veg.
I'd skip the kitkat and snackajacks too. They are empty calories.

TBH 3lbs is nothing. That could be hormonal or water loss. We really do need to check that calories in do not exceed calories out.

OP, you sound like you are angry at the food, angry at SW (fair enough) and angry at yourself. Can you try looking at dieting as something that can be really positive. There aren’t many things in life that you can do just for yourself that will make you feel happier. It’s something you can do without anyone else getting involved. There is no need for it to cost you anything either,
If I were you I would use MyFitnessPal. I’d just eat carefully for the first week to get you body and mind ready for proper dieting. I’d start at 1600 and then see what happens. Weigh yourself regularly and if you aren’t losing then drop the calories by 200 calories.
When I need to lose Weight I aim to do it very slowly, maybe just one pound a week - I think you should aim for more though depending how much you want to lose.
Think how good you will feel when you have lost some of the weight.

3lbs a month is 36lbs a year, 2.5 stone. Nothing wrong with slow and steady if you want to eat bigger portions and not feel hungry and miserable. It's got to be sustainable so if you do anything drastic you might lose weight more quickly but be at a higher risk of getting fed up or putting it back on.

@Notcoolmum - that's a really good point. To lose 2.5 stone in a year is a great achievement.

But 3lbs in a month is snails pace, and it doesn't need to be that slow!

Hi OP - it's so hard when the weight doesn't shift. I hate having a maintain - it screws me up for a few days. I think it must be the carb portion sizes, like others have said. I often have half a jacket potato now or deliberately buy small ones.

Make sure your plate is definitely a third to a half of speed food. My plates of food are very big but i'd say the majority of the size is always vegetables.

I lose a steady 1-2 pounds per week and have done since last August 2020 when I joined.

I've written out what I have in a day to see if you could maybe try and tweak yours? Are there any fruits or veg you really like which you could have with each meal?

I measure out my milk for the day in the morning and use it all for coffee through the day.

Breakfast - Mushrooms, 2 x bacon medallion, 2 scrambled eggs.

Lunch - Chicken or 5% beef mince with loads of salad. I like using Nandos garlic peri peri as a condiment now because it is only 1syn per tablespoons. I used to love Mayo but I have cut that out.

Snack - mullerlight yoghurt or a hard boiled egg. If I have eggs for breakfast I try and snack on something else.

Dinner - half a jacket potato with chilli and salad or sometimes I have white rice instead of potato. Again, make sure your plate has mainly speed food on it.

For me it was finding that really going for it with the veg made a massive difference.

I tend to use most of my syns on alcohol or a biscuit or two.

I lost 7.5 stone doing SW. I only ate carbs with one meal, didn't snack, had my syns with my meals.

You're not meant to add fruit and veg to what you're already eating, you need to replace some of what you're eating with speed foods. Imagine your plate, it should be a quarter carbs, quarter protein and half speed on a good plate. If I had pasta, I'd put my salad on the plate to cover half, then put the pasta and topping on next to the salad.

You need to change your mindset of snacking and feeling full full. Try drinking more water or sugar free squash. I had a drink bottle that was 750ml, and made sure I drank 3 of those throughout the day. Peed a lot in the first few days as my body wasn't used to drinking so much, but it does help with feeling less hungry.

It's been a while since I did SW, but when I did one of the rules was 'everything in moderation' as well as 'keep within your syns'. Maybe you missed one of those rules?

Report
bluepie · 15/01/2021 20:08

'everything in moderation'

Isn't the point of a diet plan to be a bit more specific than that? If it was as simple as that the diet industry wouldn't be worth billions. A diet plan helps people understand what 'moderation' is.
