Pregnant and massively overweight!

Hello ladies,

I've recently found out I'm pregnant and although we are thrilled - I am really overweight and January was meant to be mission weight loss as we are getting married in 18 months!!!

Now I know being pregnant is not the ideal time to look at dieting/losing weight - but I spoke about my concerns to my midwife as being so overweight is so so unhealthy let alone being so overweight at the start of my pregnancy and she suggested following SW. I've done SW before (not pregnant) and did well but as years have gone by it's piled back on 🙄.. I just wanted to know if anyone else has followed the plan whilst pregnant and their experience.

Please before I get any negativity about embracing my pregnancy and it being beautiful etc .. I agree this isn't time to be super conscious but I am conscious of being at risk to so many more complications being overweight.. it isn't something I'm doing to 'look good', I'm really concerned about my health before and after the birth and of course the wedding is in the back of my mind too.

Thanks everyone xxx

You can do SW whilst pregnant but I think you might need a letter from your doctor or midwife? I seem to recall something about there but I may have been hallucinating...

Lular3110 · 04/01/2020 18:29

Thanks Ginger.. did you do the plan whilst pregnant?

The midwife said I'll get some paperwork from SW which she will need to sign off and I then return it to group. Fingers crossed!

You may find that you naturally lose some weight anyway

I found that my excess weight is caused by enjoying large glasses of wine with dinner. (And a few after)

Once I became pregnant i continued eating normally but swapped wine for water and I actually look slimmer.
I’ve lost the puffiness that sugary/alcohol drinks cause

Ginger1982 · 04/01/2020 18:33

@Lular3110 no, I joined when I saw myself in DS's christening pics 🤦‍♀️ and lost 1.5 stone. Needing to join again though! 😆

Lular3110 · 04/01/2020 18:44

@NemophilistRebel I wish that would be the case but I don't really drink anyway, I am going to swap other drinks for water anyhow and pray that helps a bit. My previous 2 pregnancies I put on 4 stone both times and I was the weight I am now at full term so I just - health wise - can not afford to gain anymore weight!!

How far along are you??

@Ginger1982 1.5 stones that's so good! How did you find the plan?! I'm really excited to get fully into it and pray it keeps the extra pounds at bay!! Xxx

What kind of drinks do you have at the moment?

Ginger1982 · 04/01/2020 18:48

I found it really easy once I got the hang of it, but you need to be committed to it as once I started veering off is when the weight went back on again, though thankfully I haven't got to where I was at the start! It's basically a complete change of eating habits. I liked the classes too for the support.

Lular3110 · 04/01/2020 18:51

@Twillow hey hun - I really don't like so don't drink hot drinks or fizzy drinks thankfully m and obv not alcohol so mainly water/juice which I know is full of sugar so going to start reducing that from now! Do you have any tips or experience doing the plan?

Hi there I’m in similar situation, followed sw years ago reached target and stayed there until first child then put on FIVE stone during pregnancy, now I’m still 1.5 stones heavier than I was that the start of my first pregnancy so can’t but on so much weight again with this pregnancy- only early days . I am considering joining slimming world again so I can get weighed weeekly and be accountable. Ideally I wouldn’t need to put on any weight but absolutely want to keep it at a minimum!

Lular3110 · 05/01/2020 16:18

@Wudgy hey hun I know how I feel.. I really shouldn’t gain anything but I know inevitably I will.. but I think going to slimming world will be limiting the damage at least! I’m more or less the same weight I was when I gave birth the last two times it’s really dreadful. I feel so heavy and uncomfortable already and I know it will only get worse so I really need to get a grip and just focus on being healthy and I’m sure it will help somewhat (I hope)!

I'm following slimming world pregnant. I was at target and a member when I got pregnant and I lost my way from about 5 weeks due to bad nausea, then Xmas and so gained a stone, I've been back on plan just over a week (12 weeks pregnant tomorrow) and have lost 5lb of that 14lb gain. You do need your midwife to sign your slimming world form but honestly I really do recommend it! You get a bit more allowance wise when pregnant, you get extra healthy extras and it's a really healthy plan for you and baby and nothings really off limits for days you just need what you fancy! They don't focus on the numbers when you're pregnant at group, just support your healthy eating choices. Good luck and congratulations xxx

I know this threads been quiet for a while but I’m on SW but only 6 weeks pregnant so don’t want to tell the consultant just yet. Does anyone have the little book that you get? If so can you send me pics of it please?

Thanks 😘

Hi, I just had my baby 4 weeks ago and was in the same boat as you. I was a member of slimming world (but had only just started) however I gave it up during my pregnancy as I could only keep toast and biscuits down! I had a few issues with my blood pressure but apart from that my pregnancy was problem free and I had a natural birth with just gas & air, my son is also very healthy (and being overweight does not mean necessarily gestational diabetes or a big baby) my son was 6lbs 15 at term. I understand you are worried about the health implications but I would be more worried about healthy, balanced eating for yourself and your baby. I have now rejoined SW and lost 6.5lbs in my first week. Wishing you a happy & healthy pregnancy

Babyg1995 · 02/02/2020 14:01

Yes you can definitely do sw while pregnant i know the struggle I've put on 4 stone this pregnancy putting me in the obese category really trying not togain anymore but it's hard I'm 30 weeks and massive plus lack of sleep makes me eat even more I'm starting sw tomorrow until the end of pregnancy then will go to low carb after baby's here.
