Artificial Sweeteners

I recently joined SW and am finding it really easy so far. The one query I have concerns artificial sweeteners - sweeteners like aspartame (sp?) give me stomach cramps so I thought I would just give them all a wide berth, however, as I get more used to the plan I am finding a few recipes that use sweeteners and some foods (like rhubarb) that I just wouldn't manage to eat without some additional sweetness. What are other people using, and which brands could you recommend? Thank you :)

Have you tried Stevia? It's plant based. You don't need a lot either.

Invisimamma · 09/05/2019 19:35

You could use sugar and count the syns. 1syn per teaspoon. I imagine the recipes are not using huge amounts?

I also hate sweeteners, I hate the taste including Stevia. I also don't think sweeteners encourage healthy eating (and some are linked to cancers etc) I would rather syn the sugar, that way I'd be eating "normally" and would limit my sugar intake, rather than allowing myself to eat even more rubbish by substituting with sweetener... That's my opinion anyway!

I find natvia really good, no odd taste to it at all.

I tend to go for a sucrose based one. I've never managed to get sukrin but I believe it's good.

Thank you all. I think I'll probably go for the safe option and just syn any real sugar I use, although I am experimenting with cooking rhubarb in sugar free lemonade at the mo, so we'll see how that turns out.

I don't think any sweeteners are linked to cancers? I thought researchers had debunked that?

Oops you're right sorry! I have always thought this, I must have heart it years ago, glad to find there's not a link! (Still don't like the taste though :p)

There is no evidence sweetners are bad for you and they are some of the most researched food substances known.

Stevia is completely different to aspartame so can’t see why it would affect you in the same way. After all sugar cane doesn’t does it?

I like Sukrin Gold, get it off amazon. No aftertaste, and a bag lasts me ages. I've not tried the Sukrin granulated sweetener though.
