Red lentil soup.

I have a recipe for SW red lentil Dahl soup, and I’m looking forward to making some for Monday, but my pack of dry red lentils were best before August 2016. Can I still use them, or buy new ones?

.....Ignore my username, I love soup, it was a tongue in cheek Userame response to another thread.

I wouldn't bother. They're only about a quid a pack.

BoringSoup · 16/11/2018 12:18

I’ll pick some more up tomorrow then.

I’ve loads of stuff in that corner cupboard of mine that could have been there for a while. I think I’ll be flinging more stuff out by the end of the day...

Oh I'd totally use them... they're dried and will likely last for decades. All this requirement for BB dates on items that don't need it drives me bonkers!

BorisAndDoris · 16/11/2018 13:01

I'd use them. They will be absolutely fine, it's not like they actually go off if they're kept dry.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/11/2018 13:02

I'd use them.

justforareply · 16/11/2018 13:14

I'd taste a few to see if tasted stale and if not, I'd use them

BoringSoup · 16/11/2018 15:27

Thanks, I was wondering if they’d be ok being as they are dry.
I’ll buy a new pack just in case.

I’ll try them first I meant to say.

I'd use them.

I have a shit load of brown lentils that expired in 2014 (they was expiring in a corner shop nearby and selling for 15p a pack) me and DH have been eating them since then and we are still alive. They'll be fine to eat!

BoringSoup · 18/11/2018 21:42

I ended up buying a new pack, but I’ll still give em a whirl especially after what @TimeToRevolutionize says 😄.
Cheers all.

I would have thrown them away at midnight on 31 August 2016.

Ceilingrose · 22/11/2018 20:04

They'll be fine. Although for reasons I don't understand, split yellow lentils don't seem to cook after the sell by date, however long you cook them for. Even in the pressure cooker or slow cooker. They remain bullet like.

Dried pulses don’t go off
