Do people who promote things get paid for it?

All I ever see on Instagram is people promoting JD Seasonings, saying how amazing they are, how much they intensify the flavour of their foods and underneath they always put "use my code to get 20% off all orders", same goes for weight loss planners like Princess Planning, Sarah's Creative Kitchen EXPENSIVE chocolates... £19.99 for a "pizza" chocolate?... Blush, spicentice ... seriously are they really that worth it? I've tried 3 of the JD Seasonings kit which set me back at almost £10 and 1 of them I didn't like at all, the other one was Cajun and it tasted EXACTLY like normal Cajun spice that you just buy from a shop and the other one had mustard seeds which you have to temper in oil before you cook it to get the flavour and aroma but it says to add straight to your food so that's not right. I'm know they're a family run business but my God, they're EXPENSIVE... as if this Slimming World malarkey isn't already dear enough! Shock Sorry for the rant going on... maybe I'm too poor to buy any of their products lol.

They probably get a % of the sale as comission for sending business to the manufacturers. It disheartens me when I see obvious advertising like this. I post on Instagram to inspire others, not make money from it.

raisedbyguineapigs · 18/05/2018 19:18

The sites like Pinch of Nom get paid for the things they use when they promote it. I find the site really difficult to use because of it, but I guess they aren't going to be doing it for free.

Kezzie200 · 19/05/2018 10:23

I think they should declare if they get commission. Our SW leader banged on about these seasonings and i never knew it wasnt because she had seriously found them herself and loved them.

SleepIsForTheWeek · 19/05/2018 10:32

I guess it depends on who is doing the promoting.
I'm always banging on about what I've found that's syn free that enhances what I am cooking, and really appreciate finding stuff that I can use. Having said that a lot of them are expensive so I steer clear of those.

InfiniteSheldon · 20/05/2018 17:57

Your SW leader won't be paid by JD Seasonings we aren't allowed to be. I wasn't allowed to promote my personal training business at my SW group no other company is allowed to promote except the Iceland AS foods.

fromtheshires · 24/05/2018 17:48

Its one thing someone banging on about how amazing something is in group (I do it all the time with Mikado sticks and chip seasoning) as im not getting paid for it and anything I post is tried this, tastes great to tell others on social media what I think of it.

However......there are so many people saying how amazing a product is (JD Seasonings to use the OP's example) with use code MYNAME20 to get 20% off. Its obviously written as an advert when you look at the style of witing on their other posts as its totally different.

I follow loads of instagrammers and completely agree with you. jd seasonings, princess planning, Sarahs creative kitchen... it annoys me SO MUCH.

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 25/05/2018 17:05

Doing my head in. Sarah's Creative Kitchen is an absolute rip off! They say how amazing her chocolate is... but so is Thorntons?! I can have far more cheaper chocolate within my syns than this amazing chocolate they keep on about! Princess Planning... a notepad from Wilko is fine?! JD Seasonings there's honestly NOTHING special about them from my own experience of trying it... never again

I quite like the JD seasonings if Im being honest. Chips with the chips+wedges one are lovely. HOWEVER I hate their blatant advertising! I've noticed celebs write #ad if they post a sponsored post, but the SW instagrammers don't.

fromtheshires · 26/05/2018 07:38

I could be wrong bu im fairly sure a lod of youtubers got into trouble for this and not decalring it as a paid video. I hope these instagrammers arent falling foul of the law as well

LemonSqueezy0 · 27/05/2018 23:59

I've noticed this all Over my Instagram too! The photos for the JD seasonings are usually picture perfect too..I wonder if they get help with them? I guess they get a load free, or a % of the sales they generate from their code. I've seen all the ones mentioned above, they're everywhere!

Emmak789 · 01/12/2018 12:19

I think some people get offered freebies in exchange for reviews. Just so you know I didn't have a good experience with Sarah's creative kitchen. My order never arrived and Sarah didn't care. I had to raise a dispute with my bank when she didn't bother to respond to me.

sunshineNdaisies · 15/12/2018 13:29

I got sucked in because I stupidly believed they liked the stuff.

I agree with Sarah's Creative Kitchen. The chocolate tastes horrible. Never again. I do like the treat plate chocolates though - the choc orange one is my favourite. I don't think she does any codes, at least I've never seen any, so I think TPC is more genuine.

I bought from spicentice using a code and didn't like the spices at all.

So I'm not going to get sucked in anymore. I am actually on instagram a lot less than when I first started my SW journey. I just don't like all the fakeness of the food loving and the clothes that they are again clearly being paid to wear.

Also some of the instagrammers have lost far too much weight and I don't think it's healthy to follow them nor is it good for them to be told (wrongly) how amazing they look.

I also think the slimming meet ups are a waste of time and effort and just a reason to get more fans / discount codes / money
