Miss Slinky wrong wording !!

TracyD2018 · 15/01/2018 21:59

Firstly , i would like to Thank Mumsnet - if it was not for your threads about concerned ladies and the wording Miss Slinky , i would not be right now trying to stand up for so many that are offended, upset, angry, confused etc about this award wording-
Quick explanation - After joining SW last march in just a couple of months i won woman of the year in my class competition i was delighted. Ok, im the class clown but also as ive been told by class members, i contribute a lot to help others, recipes from my cooking experience, chats to encourage others etc and i appreciated the award - I went on to opening an instagram page to share my SW foods/inventions of foods/desserts galore and have loved it then opened a facebook page too -

Then came the announcement the week before about a certain award called Miss Slinky 😮 Straight away sitting there listening I instantly sank in my chair 🙈 OMG im far from Slinky , this makes me feel rubbish , why have they got an award called this when ladies are trying hard to slim down still and have a fair way to go, not feeling slinky or looking it - But then my consultant carried on with her words, that the award was actually about inspirational people in the class, vote for the person whos journey you admire, for their weight loss etc etc OK NOW im confused ?? Where does slinky come into this ?? So long story shory 🙈 I WON and far from slinky i put my inner emotions to one side for the sake of the class members and respected that lots of them couldnt see my quarm or upset inside me- I fell home that day in tears - I wanted to shout out to the wirld in my instagram and facebook inhad won but knew 😕 I could get sarcastic remarks here from sooooo many non SW people who just look at my food ie “Your still a big lady” “Not Slinky like” - reason i went to SW was to get me back, lose weight but get confidence back 😢 This affected me so i asked around was i being stupid about it ! Everyone agreed that Miss Slinky was probably the wrong word and so i webt further and took to the internet to search for other ladies who had won and had to explain themselves or disagreed with the award wording etc and I found mumsnet straight away going back to 2015 😮 So i took this to Slimming World - last November , Long story short i took this concern to stand up for not only myself but for many other ladies - Ive been ignored by Slimming World , 😡 after many weeks and obviously after their national miss slinky award i approached again and told the customer service lady in my messages that her promise to pass on my upset and concern had been ignored , the team had not got back to me !! This is a very important issue how come? I had a robotic answer and have been ignored by slimming world team still - so ive now written on their facebook page , infront of all their followers - im not keeping quiet anymore, we pay good money and they bat on about members come first !!!!

I ask - is there any ladies here who still feel this is wrong to be labelling an award like this as Miss Slinky ???

I thought i was spitting my dummy out but seems there so many out there has had same experience. Standing up for them too x

Once again Thankyou Mumsnet

What do you suggest as an alternative?

Boatsnack3 · 16/01/2018 08:55

I kind of agree with you, I also won Miss Slinky, I had just hit target so perhaps could be described as slinky but I still found it a little embarrassing tbh. Slinky is a word that describes a cat not a person.

The award should be Miss/Mr Inspirational. I didn't go to sw to become slinky, I went to lose weight, become healthy, strong and confident. I just dont think Slinky describes who I want to be.

Good Luck with your campaign

Miss Inspiration

All across the classes , online etc this awards is talked about by sw as inspiration. Asking class members to vote for the person who inspires you, whos weight loss you admire, whos journey you watch etc etc NOT Vote for the person who you think looks Slinky ! :(

Exactly Boatsnack3

I loved and appreciated my class voting for me to win but in the photo i was cringing / i knew i wanted to tell the world Im inspiring people , i wanted to show everyone on my insta or fb but half of me instantly was such a mess inside that day, awful experience, I knew so many people not in the SW world as such would not know what this award was actually for UNTIL i described it, so i would have to so a linger write up instead of Look what I won!!! Which woukd be self explanatory if the award certificate had Miss Inspiration on it but no - it had SLINKY right across it and i felt humiliated having to explain to followers/friends and family - I won but take no notice to the word Slinky - my journey is only half way im far from slinky i said - I should not and lots like us shoukd not of felt this way , so i took it to SW - i actually cried saddened at how I felt to customer service lady who listened hard, told me at first it was tongue in cheek so i explained - this is not just about me - google it - its been an upset - disagreement for years yet you still offend ladies - she promised to pass it to a team - IVe never heard from anyone - That was Nov last year!!!! Disgraceful for a company taking so much money each week x

I hate the awards at groups. They’re all a popularity thing and make others who have put a lot (sometimes more) of effort in, feel crap when they’ve not won or even nominated.

Woman of the year as well, went to a woman who never lost any weight in the two years she had been going to group, but was an inspiration as she still attended apparently. That coming from the group leader, who I think was just glad she had gotten so much money from her.

TracyD2018 · 16/01/2018 11:36

I might add that with no disrespect to national winners - i didnt even know there was a national award but anyhoo, the winner is not voted for by the public/members up and down the UK they are chosen by the sw office so to speak and this also is very very wrong , to say that this years winner lost 4 stone - thats it - i have seen ladies lose like 13 stone , from illness to healthy, stories quite unbelievable and sooooooo inspirational but no - not a chance !!!

I am relatively new to SW, so when I heard about this title I thought they were having a laugh. Miss Slinky almost ridicules members who have lost loads but still have a way to go.

Miss Inspirational would be far better. Good luck with your campaign, Tracy.

(Is there a generic message that we could send to the 'contact us'part of the website? The more that send the message in the more they might listen...like an online petition.)

TracyD2018 · 16/01/2018 23:14

Oldowl im not sure , i would love to see if there was a petition /poll i could set up to show SW

I however have posted all over different social medias this last few days and funnily enough had a response email from slimming world - its a glimmer of hope but they have me in a position now where im not fully trusting their word thry could of just emailed because i did mention papers and so did another member or who knows they might listen, but i am vontinuing to collect comments/ messages etc to keep on at them to show them there is a vast amount concerned about it .

I am not allowed to put on my persinal fb links etc on here so i do not know how to direct anyone or maybe admin could let is know if there is any polls here x i will explore too x

Sod the awards - they don't matter - how you feel is all that does!

raisedbyguineapigs · 27/01/2018 15:40

To be honest all the SW wording needs an overhaul. Why are Syns called 'syns'? Surely there is a better word thats not so closely associated with 'sin'? and body magic is just so twee! And not magic-it's hard work!

waterfall0119 · 29/01/2018 19:45

Guinea pigs and don’t get me started on star week!! VOM

raisedbyguineapigs · 30/01/2018 15:42

Bleugh! Even our consultant seems embarrassed to use Star week! Luckily the important bit, the plan seems to be sound. You just need to avoid all the terrible language!

Mans1503 · 03/11/2020 22:08

@TracyD2018
Hey! I wondered if you had got anywhere at all with this. The awards are coming up again and I agree with what is said above. I don't understand why they have woman of the year AND Miss Slinky, if "Slinky" means inspirational...

Mans1503 · 03/11/2020 22:09

@TracyD2018
Hey! I can see this thread is nearly 2 years old, but it's that time again. Obviously, it hasn't changed, but I wonder if you had any feedback?

Virgo1958 · 09/11/2020 22:49

Slimming World will never change what they have been doing for years. Syns is supposed to mean synergy. Agree Miss Slinky is ridiculous and also very sexist. Loads of men go to SW now.

dingoesatemybaby · 20/11/2020 15:46

@Virgo1958 The Men's version is 'Mr Sleek', not much better.

I do like SW, I like the plan and I have had success with it. My issue is all the little bits around it like the terminology as mentioned above, the brand deals (muller light!) and some of the crap the consultants come out with.

If you can see past all that it does work. I actually enjoy reading the 'success stories' cause it helps me focus and reminds me that the plan does work. I can see how 'Miss Slinky' is an issue though.
