Why is tinned soup so high in syns?

I usually make my own SW-friendly soup but my freezer stash has ran out and I've grabbed a tin of Heinz lentil for lunch at work today. But I've just check the syn value and it is 9 syns a tin- oops!!

However when I run the numbers through the syn calculator using cooked lentils as the free food it comes up at syn-free!! I understand that homemade soup is healthier but why so high for tinned soup since most of the ingredients are free? Surely it must be a healthier and more filling lunch than a free mug shot?

Just a bit confused and curious really

Ingredients are below, so there should definitely be a few syns for corn flour and wheat flour.

Ingredients:
Water, Lentils (22%), Carrots, Tomatoes (5%), Onions, Modified Cornflour, Cornflour, Wheat Flour (contains Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Salt, Yeast Extract, Flavouring, Herb Extracts, Spice Extracts, Herb, Smoke Flavouring (contains Wheat), Spice, Vegetables 18%

Most likely the flour and cornflour.

Some tins can be a heathy extra.

Due to thickeners, added sugars and fats.

Very easy to make your own soup. Simmer vegetables in stock for 30 mins. Season to taste. Liquidise half if you want thickish soup with bits, liquidise all if you want a smooth soup or do not liquidise if you want a broth with vegetables pieces in it.

Basic veg soup:

Onions
Carrots
Peas
& Stock.

Sorry, duh, just seen you are used to making soup!

A tin is 2 servings. Apparently. Another reason why homemade is better.

Thanks. I have no doubt that homemade soup is better but just surprised at how high in syns the tin of lentil soup is considering the ingredients, and the fact it is zero syns when using the syn calculator. 9 syns is 50g of flour/corn flour which would be a lot of flour in a 400g tin, and no fat or sugar added. Just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Anyway, back to making homemade soup for me!

Have you tried the frozen soups in Iceland which are made by Slimming World? They are delicious and completely free!
