Slimming World...where have I gone wrong?

JP1985 · 27/08/2016 16:06

I joined SW group last Saturday and stuck to it religiously. I used 9/10 Syns per day and didn't cheat at all. I have a different Hexb everyday to try and make sure I was having different things and tried to make sure it was varied. I went this morning and maintained. My friend who I joined with lost 5 and a half pounds. I feel so deflated and just wonder where I have gone wrong. Even the consultant said I shouldn't have maintained in the first week. Has anyone else had this problem??

Have you been drinking plenty of water?
Could you write down one of your food journey days just to see what you are eating?

Here is an example of one day of my food diary:

Carrot
Cucumber
Lettuce
Tomato
Beetroot
Fat Free Vinagrette

Dinner
Haddock Fillet
Slimming World Chips (About a handful worth)

I was planning on having Melon & Pineapple afterwards but it smelt off so I had to have another apple :(

I also snacked on a Muller Light
Walkers French Fries (18g) - 4 Syns
Fun Size Chocolate Bar - 3 Syns
Half Spoon - 2 Syns
Coffee
4 Pints of Water
300ml of 1% milk - HEXA

Are you due on? I can gain up to 2 lbs when I'm on, because of water retention.

It could be that your body takes a while to show changes but you'll smash it this week (and as it's not your first week on plan, you'll be eligible for the Slimmer of the Week). One lady at my group works on a two week lag - if she's had an off-plan week, it doesn't show that week but shows the week later. She now recognises this and can work with it!

Hi emwithme,

Thanks for the reply. Not due on yet...went on the pill last week though so not sure whether this would affect things?

Ahh that would be good if I did smash it this week. I am so determined which made it more disappointing as I couldn't understand where I went wrong!

The girl who I went with had even had a big night out the night before and still lost!

Fingers crossed for a more positive week!!

I had to stop attending SW group because I found it so demotivating with everyone talking about their "slip ups" and eating pizza etc and still losing 3-4lb where I'd stick to it religiously and lose 1lb on a good day, usually 0.5lb. It seems to work so well for everyone else!
Stick with it, hopefully you will see a good loss next week :)

Any medication or hormonal change (and starting the pill comes into both these categories at once) can definitely affect you. I've been reducing a lot of medication over the past year and the week I change things - even though it is a reduction - I don't see a loss (I'm lucky if I maintain) even if I've been on plan 100%.

I'm not a fast loser, either. Average 3 lbs every 4 weeks - but I have lost 3 stone 1 lb since I started back at SW on 25 June 2015. Consistent, small, losses are what the medical profession recommends anyway (my GP is thrilled with my loss) and it means you're probably making changes to your eating habits and lifestyle that mean you can maintain this in the long term - which is the goal, IMO.

Come and join us on the SW daily thread. We're a friendly bunch but we have a big stick if you need it!

My pill makes me gain two pounds, I am lighter on the break week.

Because I am a scientist who knows about measurement uncertainties, I think the 'only weigh yourself once a week' is bollocks because you miss out on small variations.

Stick with it for another week - the plan does work if you follow it, which it looks like you have.

One thing to consider is how much you have to lose and same for your friend. If she is very overweight, she will lost a good few pounds each week if she sticks to the plan, in the first few weeks at least. But it really could be the pill, or everything might kick in for you and you might go back next week with a huge loss.

Good luck Smile

Check the bread you're eating. Make sure it's exactly what is included in the HE. If it's the 'wrong' bread you could be looking at extra syns.

And look at adding more speed foods....I use onions in a lot of my cooking and extra strawberries I fat free yogurts.

Not sure how slimming world counts it all up with its morally-loaded syn terminology, but that looks like a good 1700kcal to me, depending on portions. Not surprised you're not losing. Try cutting the snacks or the chips.

There was a lady at my group who lost nothing on the first week, and 6lbs on the second. Please do stick with it, and drink lots of water (so tedious!)

"Because I am a scientist who knows about measurement uncertainties, I think the 'only weigh yourself once a week' is bollocks because you miss out on small variations."

Um, that's exactly why you're only weighing once a week though so you're not paying attention to all the little variations, it's a looking at the bigger picture kind of thing.

JP, hope you will stick at it.
I would put money on you having a really good loss your second week, if you continue keeping on plan.
The only comment I would make about your food diary is that the dinner you mentioned did not have a third speed food ( mushy peas not speed).
Expecting to hear good news from you after your next weigh-in.
As em says, join in on the daily thread: I've been following SW for years, but have still learned a lot from the friendly MNetters on there.

I have this with slimmingworld. Last time I joined it took three weeks before I lost anything and then I was so disheartened with it. My friend lost 7lb her first week and had lost almost a stone before I lost anything.
The slimming world leader went through my diaries and told me to make sure I weighed everything accurately and drink plenty of water.

I think the first week is really hard but what I would say from your food diary (and I've only been doing this for 6 weeks but have lost a stone) is that you could think about significantly increasing the amount of speed food in each meal. For me, that means the majority of each meal is now made up of veg including breakfast. Maybe that would mean you'd feel fuller and not need to snack on the crisps and chocolate?

Do you log everything in a food diary or an app like My fitness pal? My friend and I text each other most days to let us know what we're eating and it's a good way to share food ideas and stay motivated. I ate a lot of stir fry veg the first few weeks and I think it helped me change my mindset. I know that even though I'd be under the syn allowance, my height and frame mean that I wouldn't be able to incorporate bread, butter, crisps and choc into my diet and still lose weight (others can and I'm v v envious).

Good luck for next week.

A typical day for me would be:

2 poached eggs ( sometimes with salmon) or fruitsalad

crustless SW quiche with salad or chickpea & butternut squash tangine with rice

diet cola chicken ( we all love this!)

snacks: fruit, HexA cheese with gherkins, hand of nuts (B), hardboiled eggs. Loads of herbal tea.

syns: mocha coffee with lotus biscuit

Plus I run 3 times a week 5k and initially put on 6 lbs after I started that but lost it.

I tend to make all my SW lunches on a Sunday and freeze them Take out the night before. Also if I have left over dinner I freeze this for another lunch.

I just realised I commented on the weighing and not the OP, I meant to put it afterwards, lol.

What you've put there looks ok, but, make sure that your speed free really is at least a third of your plate. (There's none in your dinner at all and having it afterwards kind of defeats the point).

You're fine to use your Syns on whatever, but, if you mean snacking as in between meals because you're hungry then you might want to have a think about what you're having for meals and whether you'd be better snacking on speed and free foods and then using your Syns on something you really want?

What you lose in your first week an be very much to do with what you did the week before you joined as well, if you were having a lot of calories right up until the moment you started that can result in a small loss the first week then the big one in the second, a lot of people find it's a two week thing as other people have said. But also if you were already trying to lose weight, you might not get that huge loss at all.

If you get the speed free balance right though you should be looking for one to two pounds a week.

Slimming world and HRT..... Calling all sw experts! I have been stalking for a bit and finally plucked up the courage to post. As the heading suggests I am on sw and hrt - I am in my late 30's and had a total hysterectomy 5 years ago and have been on elleste solo 2mg ever since. I have been doing sw for 6 weeks now and have lost 10lbs, of which I am chuffed about but.... My mum has been doing it also,is 62 disabled and has lost 8lbs more than I have. She is 9 months into her sw stint but we have compared notes to the dates. So? Is it my flipping hrt keeping the weight hanging on in there? Has anyone else found this? I have A LOT to lose! At least 5 Stones as I started off just under 19! We are doing it ourselves I am giving her a fiver a week ( saving for a hol in May ) weighing in properly and discussing food etc. I don't tend to go over syns I only did on my birthday and then planned 3days following around that and kept the syns at a bare minimum. Here is a rough food plan:-
Milk 350ml a day
Weetabix x2 - Breakfast
Low fat super noodles - Lunch
Pasta - Tinned toms, herbs chicken breast - Tea
Snacks - lots of fruit, harvest lite bar,
syns depend on what I am having I.e I may have a brown bread sarny for lunch and therefore use my syns for my weetabix.
I live on Muller lites!
Any suggestions? Or tips would be greatly received. Thanks :)

You might get on better if you start a new thread I think your post has got a bit lost!

You need to up your speed food, there is none in your lunch and you need more with your evening meal. I would lay off the muller lights for a week I know slimming world says there free but if your eating loads of them it can affect your weightloss.

I don't get big losses on slimming world and find if hard to stay motivated. Have lost 6.5 lb in 4 weeks. Lost the same amount in the last week as I did in the first two combined. It's frustrating but worth the effort in the long run. I try very hard to compare myself with others. it's a longer road for some of us. Good luck.

I only lose slowly with sw. around 3 or 4 lbs a month. I tend to have 2 good weeks and then 2 weeks with either a maintain or a half pound loss.

But have lost 1st and 11lb since the beginning of May so look and feel a lot better.

Be really honest about your plate and is there really a third speed on it and are you eating it!
